Pilchuck Animal Hospital is looking for a Veterinary Assistant with 2 years of veterinary ER experience to join our Small Animal Emergency team!
Our assistants are responsible for the care and treatment of unstable and or critically ill patients, triaging emergency patients, monitoring hospitalized patients, performing patient laboratory tests, treatments and nursing care, admitting and discharging patients, client communication and education, and answering technician calls.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES to be completed under the direction of the technician(s) on duty:
Assist the veterinarians and technicians as needed.
Observe animals for changes in clinical status.
Complete daily scheduled treatments on routine and critical patients, treatment sheet creation and editing.
Maintain and monitor intravenous fluid administration.
Monitor anesthesia for routine and critical patients.
Proficient in sterile techniques for surgical procedures.
Place and maintain intravenous catheters.
Draw and process laboratory samples.
Basic medical dosage calculations
Process radiographs.
Perform hospital maintenance and other miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Maintain accurate medical records for each patient.
Be able to counsel clients on preventative protocols for parasite control, medical value of dental procedures, spay/neuters, discharges for routine and critical patients.
Load room, start SOAP, perform estimates, and perform basic financial updates.
Train newer veterinary assistants on hospital procedures.
OTHER DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Ensure the overall maintenance, cleanliness, sanitization, and organization of the hospital is maintained by assisting Hospital Attendants in the completion of their duties as necessary and when able.
Perform work according to established methods or following special instructions.
Follow the hospital policies and procedures.
Complete other duties as assigned specific to the department.
Answering phone calls with client concerns, prescription refills, appointment scheduling.
Handling monetary transactions with clients.
At least two full-time years of recent experience working as an assistant in a veterinary emergency hospital.
Must have advanced knowledge in animal anatomy, diseases, behavior and care.
Must be able to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
Must be able to understand and carry out oral and written directions, keep accurate written records, and know safety protocols.
Must have advanced knowledge in the administration of medications and recognition of abnormal conditions.
Must be proficient in aseptic technique, sterile prep, and equipment identification and maintenance.
Must have advanced knowledge in triage.
Must show advanced attention to detail and quality of work.
Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Must demonstrate an advanced understanding of standard hospital operating procedures.
Has an advanced ability to communicate with clients.
EDUCATION
· High School diploma or equivalent.
· Graduate of a Veterinary Assistant program is preferred (or displays equivalent work experience).
· Must have 2 yrs of experience as a Veterinary Assistant or possess equivalent skills (Preferred).
CERTIFICATES, LICENSE, REGISTRATIONS
· Must possess or able to maintain a Medical Clerk’s license.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
· Willing to learn new skills and work as directed with minimal supervision.
· Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 40 lbs as well as handling of materials of up to 20 lbs, additionally requires handling dogs weighing up to 150 lbs.
· Capable of walking and/or standing for long periods as well as frequently working in a bent position.
· May be required to use strength and/or agility in walking and restraining stronger, more active animals.
· Displays advanced communication skills, especially with regard to client communication and education.
· An advanced ability to problem solve and think critically.
