Our Southern California Natural Resources Team is seeking an experienced, highly motivated Restoration Ecologist to join a collaborative group of biologists, habitat restoration practitioners, and regulatory specialists. The applicant would bring technical skills and experience with Southern and Central California vegetation communities to support restoration programs and take the role of Project Manager.
The position supports multiple habitat restoration projects including conceptual and detailed design, mitigation construction oversight, managing day-to-day labor crew tasks, and maintenance and performance monitoring. Budget preparation and management of project costs are required. The position also supports business development including client outreach, lead generation, and proposal preparation. The position is based in Lompoc, CA with options for some portions of the work to be remote or from our satellite locations.
An educational background is required in restoration, ecology, soils, environmental horticulture, botany, or a related field. A thorough understanding is desired of the interrelationship of soil, hydrology, and other physical and biological processes related to promoting the trajectory of successful restoration of natural communities.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5 to 8 years of experience in environmental consulting or related field with a focus on habitat restoration.
- Minimum B.S. in ecological or restoration science, biology, botany, soils, environmental engineering, environmental horticulture, or related field.
- Critical thinking, problem solving, and practical skills.
- Strong organizational, communication, writing, and analytical skills.
- Proven ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience collecting, organizing, and analyzing field data.
Desired Qualifications
- M.S. degree in a related field
- California Qualified Applicator Certificate and/ or Qualified Applicator License, or other licenses or certifications
- Experience with restoration and revegetation techniques such as hydroseeding, seeding, container planting, erosion control installation, irrigation systems, etc.
- Machine operation skills
- Erosion control best management practices
- Ability to identify non-native species and provide guidance on adaptive management and weeding techniques and timing.
- Experience preparing technical studies and/or conceptual and detailed design plans for habitat restoration projects.
- Experience preparing Habitat Mitigation and Monitoring Plans to support permitting.
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and permits that relate to restoration projects (e.g., NEPA, CEQA, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience in proposal and budget preparation.
- Proficiency in MS Office Applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel)
- Proficiency in Collector, Field Maps and Other GIS tools
- Willingness to travel to projects in southern and south-central California.

Work hours: Monday- Friday, possible weekends. Start time as early as 6:00am.
