Rail Manager – Troutville, VA

Titan America has an excellent opportunity for a Rail Manager located at the Roanoke Cement Company, located in Troutville, VA. This position reports to the Director of Logistics. The Rail Manager oversees all aspects of rail transportation operations related to cement products within a designated region or for a specific cement company. They are responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely transportation of cement via rail networks. The Rail Manager coordinates with various departments within the organization, rail carriers, and other stakeholders to optimize operations, meet regulatory requirements, and achieve business objectives.
Responsibilities:
1. Rail Logistics Management: Supervise and manage the logistics of bulk cement transportation by rail, including scheduling, routing, and tracking shipments to ensure on-time delivery.
2. Quality Control: Collaborate with Technical Services to ensure that cement products meet specified standards throughout the transportation process, including loading, transit, and unloading.
3. Customer Service: Liaise with customers, sales teams, and distribution partners to address inquiries, resolve issues, and provide updates on delivery schedules.
4. Stakeholder Coordination: Build and maintain relationships with rail carriers, terminal operators, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders to facilitate efficient rail transportation operations.
5. Cost Management: Develop and manage budgets for rail transportation activities, identify cost-saving opportunities, and negotiate favorable terms with rail carriers and service providers.
6. Performance Monitoring: Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to rail transportation operations, such as transit times, freight costs, and equipment utilization, and implement corrective actions as needed.
7. Supply Chain Response Planning: Develop and implement emergency response plans to address incidents by the rail carrier impacting the business ensuring timely and effective responses to minimize disruptions and mitigate risks.
8. Inventory Management: Monitor cement inventory levels at distribution centers and customer sites to optimize stock levels and minimize shortages or excess inventory.
9. Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements, equipment upgrades, and technology adoption to enhance the efficiency and reliability of cement rail transportation operations.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, engineering, or a related field. Advanced degree or professional certification in transportation management or logistics may be preferred.
2. Extensive experience in logistics and transportation, with a focus on rail operations and freight management, preferably in the cement or construction materials industry.
3. Strong understanding of regulatory requirements and best practices for transporting materials by rail, including knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and industry standards.
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, external partners, and regulatory authorities.
5. Proven leadership abilities, with experience in managing teams, developing talent, and driving performance improvements in a dynamic environment.
6. Analytical skills and proficiency in data analysis tools and software used for transportation planning, route optimization, and performance monitoring.
7. Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and make decisions under pressure to meet deadlines and achieve business objectives.
8. Flexibility to travel as needed to visit rail terminals, customer sites, and other locations within the designated region.
