Job Description & Requirements
A corrections nurse is a registered nurse (RN) who specializes in providing healthcare services to individuals who are incarcerated within a correctional facility. The following are some of the primary responsibilities of a corrections nurse:
Health assessments: conducting initial and ongoing health assessments of inmates, including taking vital signs, documenting medical history and medications, and identifying any health conditions that require treatment.
Chronic care management: providing ongoing care for individuals with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and HIV/AIDS, including monitoring and adjusting medications as needed.
Emergency care: responding to emergency situations, such as heart attacks, strokes, and other medical emergencies, and providing immediate care until further medical attention can be obtained.
Infection control: monitoring for and controlling the spread of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis and hepatitis, within the facility.
Mental health care: providing mental health care, including the identification and management of mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and providing referrals to mental health professionals as needed.
Health education: providing health education and promoting healthy behaviors, including providing information on healthy diets, exercise, and disease prevention.
The ideal candidate for a corrections nurse position should have a current registered nursing license, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, and experience working in a corrections or similar healthcare setting. Additionally, a corrections nurse should have strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work effectively with a diverse patient population, and the ability to work well in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
This is a not full time but contracted travel position.
