What are the responsibilities and job description for the Itinerant Visually Impaired Teacher position at To Be Assigned?
Position Description:
- Reporting to the Executive Director of Special Education in the Student Support Unit, the Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired is responsible for assisting assessment personnel in identifying and assessing visually impaired students working cooperatively with support services and regular classroom teachers.
Scope of Responsibility:
- Facilitates services and interprets needs of the visually impaired students.
- Provides in-service training to all school personnel ensuring that the visually impaired student is positively received in the school.
- Obtains special textbooks and materials suitable for the visually impaired student.
- Maintains regular contact with the general classroom teacher to prepare reading materials in proper medium for the visually impaired student.
- Provides direct services to visually impaired students.
- Maintains reciprocal communication with the Louisiana Department of Education.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Special Education.
Skills and Qualifications:

Successful candidates will also demonstrate:
- Bachelor’s degree and visually impaired certification required.
- 3 years of experience in elementary, secondary, and/or special education.
- Strong communication skills in multiple settings and the ability to be an engaging change agent and culture- creator that can inspire and motivate.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to make decisions and recommendations.
- High degree of professionalism, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities, while consistently demonstrating sound judgment and disciplined thinking.
- In depth-knowledge of assistive technology, specifically designed for the visually impaired to train students and teachers.
- Ability to provide Braille instruction.
- Familiarity with orientation and mobility training (preferred).

Physical Involvement:
- Sitting is required part of each work day.
- Must be able to operate office equipment.
- Standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting up to 10 pounds is sometimes required.
- Ability to provide own transportation to schools, work locations and meeting sites.
- Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.
