Purpose Statement
The job of Instructional Assistant I (Title 1 Reading Aide) is done for the purpose/s of working with
individual and/or groups of students, under the supervision of a certificated teacher, in the supervision and
instruction of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff.
Functions
Adapts class assignments under the direction of the teacher (e.g. learning aids, classroom materials,
reading software, etc.) for the purpose of providing support and/or reinforcement of classroom
objectives and addressing students individual learning levels.
Administers tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. (e.g. outlining skills, sentence
construction, paragraph elements, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher in the instructional
process.
Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of
their work activities.
Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. facilitating reading activities,
grading students assignments, editing students essays, poems, short stories, research papers, etc.) for
the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts and reaching their academic goals and
potential.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying
information relative to job functions.
Edits students writing assignments (e.g. outlines, sentence structure, paragraphs, rough drafts, final
copy, etc.) for the purpose of improving students academic success through a defined course of study.
Guides students in independent study (e.g. enrichment work, remedial work, etc.) for the purpose of
assisting in the evaluation of students' progress in relation to established educational objective.
Implements instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of assisting the teacher in
improving students' academic success through a defined course of study.
Maintains classroom equipment, work area, students files/records (e.g. Read & Write scores, Title 1
student records, adapting instructional materials, reading computer lab., software applications
associated with reading and writing program, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items
and/or providing reliable information in compliance with Federal regulations.
Maintains multiplatform Reading and English computer lab (e.g. hardware, software applications for
MAC and PC labs, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of materials for use within the Title 1
Reading Program.
Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing a safe
and positive learning environment.
Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. copying, inventory records for supplies, software
applications, log of service repairs, correcting papers, student grades for Title 1 reading lab.,
attendance, phone calls, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or in providing necessary
records/materials
Promotes good habits for the purpose of improving the quality of students outcome and encouraging
student development.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks Specific skills required to satisfactorily
perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent
software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or
ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present
information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific
knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and
punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and
use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work
with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods.
Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data;
and utilize job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues
and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and
problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily
perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining
confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized routines; providing
information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. There is some opportunity
to effect the Organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical
demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
Generally the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. This job is performed in a
generally clean and healthy environment.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Job related experience is desired.
Required Testing: ParaPro Assessment Test (qualifying score of
459 may substitute required education)
