What are the responsibilities and job description for the Compensation specialist position at Tomball ISD?
Primary Purpose :
Perform payroll duties to assist the Payroll Coordinator in assuring District compliance with TEA Financial Accounting System Resource Guide (FASRG) and other governmental agencies in matters of payroll processing and reporting.
Qualifications
Minimum Education / Certification :
High school diploma or equivalent
Minimum Experience :
3-5 years business experience preferred; preferably 3 years in payroll
Special Knowledge and Skills :
Knowledge of all job-related skills necessary to perform assigned duties.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Major Responsibilities and Duties :
- Prepare all payrolls including semimonthly, manuals, voids and special payrolls.
- Prepare payroll checks for all employees and distribute to campuses and departments.
- Balance payroll earnings and deductions and prepare related documentation for transfers of funds and deposits.
- Prepare and distribute deduction checks.
- Coordinate the printing of paychecks.
- Prepare payroll reports and forms, including those required by the Internal Revenue Service, Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Retirement System, Federal Insurance Contributors’ Act (FICA), Medicare and Workers’ Compensation Commission.
- Assist the Payroll Coordinator with preparation of journal entries, as needed, for proper payroll and deduction distribution.
- Assist the Sr. Payroll Specialist in communicating with the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, Teacher Retirement System and external auditors regarding payroll.
- Prepare and update the payroll section of the District Financial Procedures Handbook and present at the District-wide Finance In-service to update personnel on procedural changes.
- Assist district administrators and staff by answering payroll procedural questions.
- Maintain confidentiality of information.
- Use educational tools available through various seminars, workshops or in-service programs to enhance job performance.
- Actively participate in professional associations and maintain current certification.
- Demonstrate initiative to develop needed skills applicable to performance of assigned duties.
- Perform financial and school business office operations that adequately and efficiently support the district’s instructional goals.
- Observe all professional and ethical standards of conduct in performance of duties.
- Perform all duties in an accurate and timely manner.
- Promote positive relations with District administrators and staff and be an advocate of the District’s mission within the community.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance.
Working Conditions :
- Long periods of sitting at a computer with repetitive hand and wrist motion.
- Must be able to handle multiple tasks at one time and prioritize work.
- Must be able to handle stress of short deadlines and possible extra hours to get the job done.
- Must be able to handle numerous interruptions and provide assistance to district personnel over the phone and in person.
- Lifting of boxes up to 53 pounds is required on occasion.
