A Day in the Life of a Project Civil Engineer

You are at the forefront of the brainstorming creative solutions for challenging projects alongside an interdisciplinary team. You will have access to state-of-the-art tools and resources. You will be improving people's lives and communities through the design of streets, active transportation facilities, and safety projects from concept plans and design development to detailed final design plans for construction.

Your job can sometimes be challenging, but you get to work with a close-knit team and a broader network of colleagues recognized as national multimodal experts.

As a member of a growing team, you will have the opportunity to manage tasks and small projects and mentor others as you grow your project management skills.

Qualifications Of a Transportation Engineer

• Bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Arkansas or the ability to obtain within the next 12 months
• 5 years of experience in civil or transportation engineering
• A broad knowledge base in aspects of street design, including AASHTO and MUTCD standards, with an understanding of what goes into the development of concept drawings, exhibits, civil details, and a PS&E project submittal
• Experience managing tasks and small projects, including coordinating utility, right-of-way, street lighting, traffic signals, and landscape and hardscape layouts.
• Interest in multimodal transportation issues and design, specifically for bicycle, pedestrian, Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets, Vision Zero, and/or transit integration
• Proficiency in one or more of the following: Civil 3D, OpenRoads, Inroads, and/or Geopak
• Excellent task and time management skills
• Excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate across disciplines
• Experience with the Microsoft Office suite of applications
  
  

As a plus, please highlight if you have any of the following:

• Experience with traffic engineering, including corridor and traffic studies
• Experience preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
• Experience with construction management of public agency infrastructure
• Experience with stormwater design and/or using software such as HydroCAD or HydroFlow
• Familiarity working with Northwest Arkansas public transportation agencies and standards

Work Schedule For a Project Civil Engineer

This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours per week. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2-3 days per week. The Northwest Arkansas office of Toole Design opened in 2023 and is located in the Ledger in downtown Bentonville on Main Street. The office is easily accessed on foot or by bicycle.
