Part-time Parking Ambassador
The Town of Amherst is seeking a part-time Parking Ambassador to serve as an ambassador of the Town by providing information to the public in a friendly and welcoming fashion. Performs a wide variety of patrol and maintenance duties in ensuring compliance of parking rules and regulations including both meters and permit parking systems.
The successful candidate will possess the abilities to effectively meet, deal, and communicate effectively with the public and handle stressful situations. Multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
Job Summary:
Performs a variety of routine patrol duties in ensuring compliance with parking rules and regulations including both meters and permit parking systems. Part time hours including Saturdays and evenings.
Supervision Received:
Works under the general supervision of the APD Operations Captain or his/her designee, who evaluates performance. Parking Enforcement Officers are guided by the Amherst Police Department Rules/Regulations, Policies and Procedures. Performs duties independently exercising judgment and discretion based on the sensitive nature of work performed. Alerts supervisor of any problems requiring his/her attention.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
Major Duties:
Provides helpful guidance in response to questions from residents and visitors of Downtown.
Supplies exceptional customer service during all interactions
Assists public in use of all parking systems
Monitors for compliance with parking permits, meters and related traffic regulations. Issues citations for violation of regulations.
Installs vehicle immobilization devices and/or arranges for towing of vehicles in relations to numerous offenses.
Communicates proactively and appropriately as part of cross functional team in parking enforcement and meter maintenance.
Performs minor repairs on jammed post meters and tests function of multi-space meters.
Provides supplemental support to Police during special events.
Performs collection duties to ensure meter revenue is collected and deposited.
Performs other duties as assigned and in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
Other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Must successfully complete background check and CORI.
Working knowledge of parking systems; working knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to effectively meet and deal with the public; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to handle stressful situations. Bilingual skills preferred.
Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver"s License or the ability to obtain one if hired.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Parking collection equipment; ticket issuance device; copy and fax machines; telephone; mobile or portable radio, vehicle immobilization devices, parking enforcement automobile.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
The work environment is generally an outdoor setting and the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Duties may be performed in inclement weather.
