Definition
Skilled and semi-skilled manual work in the care, maintenance and repair of parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, and related facilities and equipment; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor and the Working Foreman; receives specific assignments and oral instructions.
Performs routine and responsible functions, requiring the exercise of responsibility and considerable judgment in caring for and repairing grounds and facilities and careful operation of assigned equipment; unusual situations are referred to the supervisor.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed outdoors under variable weather conditions and near hazards associated with construction sites, such as loud noises, fumes and airborne particles, and proximity to moving mechanical parts; may be required to wear safety equipment. The workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations.
The employee operates a variety of hand and power tools, light and heavy equipment, and light truck. Uses lawn mowers, riding lawn mowers, rototillers, sod lifters, torches, snow blowers, and paint-marking equipment.
The employee has limited contact with the public and other town departments.
The employee has limited access to confidential information.
Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, and damage to buildings or equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains all town parks, playgrounds and athletic fields; duties include mowing, raking leaves, fertilizing and seeding lawns, and performing other landscaping tasks; may direct the work of laborers and seasonal staff.
Prepares playing fields, lays out patterns and marks fields; installs goal posts, home plate, pitching rubber, base chains and players benches and stands.
Maintains and repairs park and playground equipment; lays out and plans flower beds; performs some carpentry or masonry work; paints planks, fences, etc.; maintains and repairs steel, fabric and other fences; welds and uses torches.
Picks up and removes trash and litter; repairs park tools and equipment, such as rakes, brooms and shovels.
Maintains walks in bad weather by shoveling snow or using snow blower.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma; three years of experience in landscaping and grounds and facilities maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
Valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Knowledge of the landscaping, park and athletic field maintenance. Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in parks and playground maintenance and repair. Knowledge of layout and maintenance of athletic fields and related mathematical concepts. Knowledge of irrigation systems desirable.
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment. Ability to undertake a full range of repair work, including some carpentry and masonry work. Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely fashion. Ability to maintain appropriate and effective working relationships with other employees.
Skills in performing maintenance and repair work on grounds, fields and equipment; mechanical and carpentry skills.
Physical Requirements
Strenuous physical effort is required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, speak and hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb or balance, stoop and reach with hands and arms. The employee is routinely required to lift, move, and/or push items weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and operate equipment and motor vehicles.
