This position provides a student with an interest in parks, recreation, arts, public administration, education/teaching or related field, an introductory experience into the administration and implementation of Parks, Recreation, Sports, and Arts programming, summer camps, events, and facilities. Student Interns will be assigned to a Special project area in an area of that fits their interests and experience. Student Interns will also provide general staff support to the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department and perform other duties or responsibilities as assigned.This is a seasonal, full-time internship. This position will be available in May 2023 through August 2023. Hours are typically Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., but could include some evening and weekend hours. 40 hours per week (seasonal position, May-August) Apply today!
- Assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of a variety of Parks, Recreation and Arts activities, events, and projects, including summer day camp, youth athletics and summer camps, senior and adult programs, adult athletics, and special events;
- Willingness to develop and lead a special project in a desired area of work. Examples of special projects may include; overseeing enrichment activities in a specific topic area in our full day camps (arts, nature, theater, outdoor recreation, etc.), overseeing volunteers at events/programs/camps, delivering training for volunteers or coaches, working on policy and accreditation projects, work in a support role for participants who may need additional support (Inclusion Services).
- Utilize Recreation Management software to manage assigned program area.
- Provide support to the organization in various areas of program support, event support, and customer service.
- Complete reports, evaluations, and documentation for participant and staff feedback.
- Assist with the scheduling, training, and providing direction for volunteers.
- Read and interpret documents, including safety manuals and operating procedures.
- Frequently traverse around the community centers, town parks, open spaces, and facilities and be able to move throughout larger facilities.
- Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Employee is subject to noise, during events and activities, but generally free from additional work hazards.
- Frequently remain in a stationary position, as well as operate computers and other office equipment, such as a copy machine, printer, and telephone, as well as equipment/tools consistently found in parks and recreation operations.
- Occasionally lift items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Knowledge of and/or experience working with recreation programs and activities.
- Skilled in computer proficiency: including Microsoft Office programs.
- Skilled problem-solving abilities and techniques.
- Ability to communicate and exchange information with others both in in person and over the telephone.
- Ability to work both independently and with people of all ages and abilities.
- Ability to work the entire summer season May – August (10-14 weeks).
- Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include evening and weekend shifts.
Preference will be given to candidates who have completed at least two years of college including some credits in areas of study previously noted.
