What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crew Leader, Utilities position at Town of Christiansburg, VA?
The Crew Leader is to lead and perform work of an assigned crew performing technical and manual work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the Towns water and sewer infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Leads and oversees the work of an assigned crew; plans work assignments; trains crew members in all essential functions; maintains a safe work environment for work crew and public
• Leads the installation and maintenance of and installs and maintains water meters, water service lines, water mains, fire hydrants, water valves, air releases, sewer clean outs, sewer lateral lines, sewer mains, sewer man holes and related equipment
• Leads the testing of water mains, vacuum test sewer lines and man holes prior to putting them in service
• Leads the installation of and installs; set up of work zone to protect crew members from traffic; street closures and placement of traffic control devices and warning signs; sets up and maintains street closures and detours
• Leads and oversees work site preparation; calls locate tickets in, takes pictures and documents conditions of work site prior to work beginning and at the completion
• Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs, and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear; initiates any action necessary to correct deviations or violations
• Maintains inventories of supplies on service vehicles and ensures availability of adequate supplies to complete work activities.
• Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment
• Prepares, types, proofreads, and/or completes various forms, reports, vehicle inspection forms, inventory logs, notices, spreadsheets, or documents
• Communicates with supervisor, Town employees, and the public as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction, addresses employee performance, , addresses any safety issues or concerns
• Operates medium and heavy duty equipment, backhoes, excavators, rubber tire loaders, dozer, track loader, tandem and single axel dump trucks, service trucks, sewer jet machines, valve exerciser, water tap machines, pavement saw, chop saws, core drill, grinder, power tools, tablet, or other equipment as necessary to complete the essential functions of the position
