The Town of Groton, Connecticut is looking for an Accountant to perform highly responsible, complex and confidential professional/administrative duties. related to governmental accounting within the Finance Department. This is a union, exempt, full-time position.

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Oversees the maintenance of general ledger data information. Compiles data & performs reconciliation and analysis of the General Ledger and subsidiary accounts. Devises and implements system for general accounting. Sets up and maintains special accounts for various funds. Prepares regular periodic reports. Enters and retrieves data in an automatic accounting system. Reviews Town Departments’ revenues and expenditures, and reports potential problems to Supervisor. Works with other Town departments, outside agencies and the public as necessary. May occasionally assist with cash management duties. Establishes, modifies, documents, and coordinates implementation of accounting and accounting control procedures. Gathers and prepares financial, statistical and budgetary data as directed by Town Treasurer including collection and preparation of supporting data for annual audit data. Assists external auditors by furnishing requested information and explaining data as necessary. Responds to inquiries from employee organizations, other Town Departments and local, state or federal officials. May perform administrative tasks within the department.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a bachelors’ degree in Accounting, Business or Public Administration or its equivalent, and a minimum of 3 years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting. An equivalent combination of education and experience, which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities, may be substituted. A working knowledge of current accounting theory, principles and practices is required. A strong knowledge of computer generated financial recording and reporting is desired. Ability to prepare financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and accurately perform detailed work involving written or numerical data. Must have good computer skills, and experience creating and working with Excel Spreadsheets.
Criminal background, drug testing, and driving record checks required prior to employment.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:
Municipal experience preferred.
