Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs responsible semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation of light or medium motorized equipment in the Public Works Department; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Employees in this position operate chipper trucks, leaf trucks, bucket trucks, knuckle booms, side and/or rear loaders and other light and medium weight motorized equipment related to solid waste collection. The work is performed under the direction of the Solid Waste Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Operates leaf collection truck and leaf vacuum machine removing loose leaves from roads and curbs. Operates refuse collection truck utilizing rear load and automated side load apparatus to empty 95-gallon roll carts. Operates chipper truck and chipper machine, removing limbs and branches from roads, curbs and right of ways. Assists with solid waste collection, as needed.
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: This position involves very heavy work requiring the employee to exert over to 100 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to operate trucks and machinery. An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions; subject to hazards including exposure to working mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals; and subject to extreme heat and cold, noise and vibrations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of hazards and safety practices associated with the work; ability to operate light and medium duty vehicles and equipment including leaf vacuums, refuse equipment, chippers, etc.; knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing vehicular operation and safe driving practices; ability to follow written and oral instructions; Ability to prepare simple written records of work activities; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Position requires high school diploma or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and a North Carolina Commercial Driver"s License at time of hire.
