Definition

Semiskilled work involving the transportation of senior citizens for medical, recreational, and related purposes; all other related work as required. Driving of an 8-person passenger lift-equipped vehicle. This position will operate the van two days a week

Supervision

Works under the general supervision of the Community Center Director following established policies and procedures. Follows written schedule and takes verbal instructions.

Performs responsible duties of a routine nature which on occasion require the exercise of judgment and initiative in detecting dangerous situations.

Job Environment

Work is generally performed in a vehicle or immediately outside of the vehicle.

Work is performed under variable and sometimes undesirable conditions with the potential for exposure to varying weather conditions, automobile exhaust fumes, and automotive fuels.

Position requires substantial public contact. Individuals must be able to harmoniously work with others and perform job duties in a tactful and courteous manner.

Has limited access to confidential information.

Operates 8 person vehicles with associated passenger lift.

Errors could result in damage to vehicles and equipment, create hazards to personal safety, cause monetary loss, possible legal repercussions, delay, and confusion, endanger seniors, and cause poor public relations.

Essential Functions

  • Operates van to transport to medical appointments, recreational activities, nursing homes, and related destinations.
  • Utilizes the vehicle’s lift equipment in order to provide service to those clients whom or disabled and mobility challenged.
  • Provides shopping assistance to senior citizens and delivers groceries.
  • Assists senior citizens and disabled clients in and out of the vehicle and with packages; assists clients in wheelchairs and with limited mobility in accordance with departmental procedures and regulations.
  • May have to address emergency and/or unusual situations such as motor vehicle breakdown, personal health emergencies, and uncooperative clients.
  • Responsible for daily inspection of the vehicle to ensure a standard of safe operating condition. Assumes responsibility for scheduling routine maintenance appointments. Maintains appropriate levels of automotive fluids and reports mechanical problems.
  • Prepares required reports and maintains statistics.
  • Assists with the scheduling of routes and appointments.

Physical Requirements

Occasional strenuous physical effort is required to assist patrons entering and departing vehicle.

The position necessitates the ability to climb in and out of the vehicle frequently; frequent bending and lifting.

Frequently required to carry bundles/packages weighing twenty or more pounds; frequently required to push and pull a wheelchair and patron up and down access ramps.

Position requires substantial periods of sitting while driving the vehicle.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; experience operating a passenger vehicle lift is preferred. Must have a valid driving license.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

  • Basic knowledge of vehicle mechanics
  • Fundamental knowledge of the Town’s and surrounding communities and roadways
  • Ability to work appropriately and sensitively with senior citizens.
  • Ability to complete assigned routes within prescribed schedule.
  • Ability to address non-routine customer service issues.
  • Ability to maintain records both manually and electronically.
  • Ability to drive van under a variety of road and weather conditions.
  • CPR certification or ability to become certified.
  • Must be willing to sign a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy
  • Must be able to pass a DOT physical.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $17.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
