What are the responsibilities and job description for the Buying Manager, PSD position at Toyota?
Who we’re looking for
Toyota’s Purchasing Supplier Development Department (PSD) is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Buying Manager.
The primary responsibility of this role is to manage the activity progress of a group to meet departmental objectives/Hoshin (annual plan) while coaching and developing team members in the Toyota Way principles to ensure consistent process.
The person in this role will support PSD’s objective to develop our outsourced supply base to ensure overall best cost, quality, manufacturability, and operational self-reliance. The candidates should consistently demonstrate attributes of next level capability as outlined in the Toyota Core Competencies and meets expectations of current position.
What you’ll be doing
- Oversee all group activities related to the sourcing, pricing, and cost planning of various commodities including direct or indirect commodities / materials.
- Set direction for group based on weekly input from General Manager / Sr. Manager level.
- Establish milestones and deadlines for the team.
- Lead/Coach the development of team members in the Toyota Way in Purchasing.
- Complete required HR Team Member development initiatives and other regular performance review activities.
- Manage the group’s various initiatives to support Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) wide profit improvement.
- Cost Improvement, Localization, Monozukuri and specific vehicle profit improvement strategies.
- Lead projects beyond Purchasing to multiple internal (Quality, Design, North American Manufacturing Company, Toyota Motor Company) and external (Suppliers) stakeholders at senior levels of the organization.
- Business Process Kaizen: Identify ways to streamline and improve efficiency within the group by grasping actual work processes and eliminating waste.
- Sourcing: Review, concur and approve sourcing selections from Analyst.
- Cost Planning: Review and concur all cost planning activities for the group being managed.
- Pricing: Review, concur and approve all pricing associated with ALL pricing activities.
- Resolve commercial disputes based on supplier/TMNA varying perspectives – often $1M scope.
- Resolve quality concerns: quality spike or preproduction issues that require full attention for short periods of time.
- Approve and/or recommend final direction for closure and/or level up the Exec Mgmt. for final concurrence.
What you bring
- Bachelor's Degree (or higher) or 7 years of equivalent experience in automotive procurement
- Experience in a direct buying/purchasing role for automotive manufacturing including negotiating product cost, supplier/vendor sourcing and gap analysis
- Experience developing Strategies to define project, product or commodity direction
- Successful completion of Toyota Business Practices (practical Problem Solving experience)
- Management experience with responsibility for managing direct reports
Added bonus if you have
- Successful completion of On the Job Development Project
- Experience managing multiple levels of the Supply Chain including Tier 1, 2, 3 suppliers
- Active participation in a cross functional team within the last 2 years, beyond your daily role
- Formal leadership responsibility for a cross functional team or other special task force, within the last 2 years, beyond your daily role
