SUMMARY OF POSITION FUNCTIONS
The Medication Passer sets up, administers, and records certain prescribed medications for residents in the facility under the supervision of a licensed nurse and/or as allowed by State regulatory agencies.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
Prepares and administers safely and documents regularly prescribed oral, eye, nasal, and ear medications to residents. Prepares and administers topical medications to intact skin.
Administers as allowed, PRN drugs.
Uses the Physician's Desk Reference or other appropriate drug reference if ever unsure or unclear as to drug being administered.
Checks physician's orders against medication forms.
Maintains cleanliness and proper storage of all drugs and maintains a clean working environment.
Keeps medication cart locked while unattended.
Care for and position all patient tubing and bags as instructed.
Counts all drugs on Individual Control Drug Records with on-coming charge person at shift change.
Makes rounds and reports needs and conditions to the shift supervisor or Director of Care as applicable.
Administers vital signs and documents properly.
Keeps medical records current by charting pertinent resident conditions timely and routine charting as scheduled.
Answer call lights, bed/chair sensors, pull-pin alarms, and security care bracelet alarms promptly and courteously.
Complies with the facility's privacy practices and procedures related to resident and employee records and all state/federal privacy laws as outlined by HIPAA.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

Successful completion of a state approved training program in medication administration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
