Major Areas of Responsibility
Technical Leadership- Optimize calibration disciplines to provide innovative services while setting industry standards for turnaround time. Develop productivity tools by leveraging current and future technology. Work with auditors and team to create a robust quality system that assures compliance with ISO17025 and other governing bodies.
Management Leadership- Demonstrate ability to lead individuals/teams to accomplish production demands while empowering workforce to drive opportunities for improvement. Coach management and technical leaders within the organization to create a succession plan for continued growth. Set goals for cross training and onboarding new personnel. Provide employee performance appraisals that recognize achievements, outline opportunities to improve and set objective goals.
Customer Centric- Interface directly with customer to fulfill their calibration needs. Seek the “Voice of the Customer” in order to develop new services. Take corrective action on nonconforming customer issues assuring a sustainable solution is implemented. Work with Sales to create an offering to meet the needs of the customer while allowing Transcat to achieve favorable results. Create seamless service between laboratory and on-site service.
Business Acumen– Manage Laboratory P & L to achieve revenue, cost and profit goals. Create budgets and financial plans to drive financial performance. Work with sales and marketing organizations to create business cases to develop markets and justify new equipment.
Change Agent– Drive a culture of continuous improvement at all levels of the organization. Utilize lean enterprise tools to eliminate waste and optimize processes. Encourage an environment of healthy risk to try set a new precedence within the industry.
Strategic Planning- Develop 1,3,5 year plans to scale business while addressing workforce planning, equipment utilization and laboratory foot print.
Ensure compliance with all company, customer and governmental policies, procedures and standards and take corrective action(s) when necessary.
Perform the duties as on-site Facility Safety Officer (FSO)
Supervisory Responsibilities
As Calibration Laboratory Manager, provide management and supervisory responsibility for the day-to-day activities for a Calibration Laboratory.
Supervises a number of employees, depending on the size of the laboratory. Responsibilities include carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from credited four-year college or university preferably in a technical field; 7 years experience in repair and calibration of instruments, preferably in progressively responsible positions or equivalent combination of education and experience.
PMEL (Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory) or TMDE (Test Measurement Diagnostic Equipment) training military experience in the calibration field plus 5 years civilian experience (at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity) should sufficiently prepare a candidate for this position.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
CCT certification through ASQ will is desirable
Must possess a valid driver’s license

- Interprets schematics, instruction manuals, and/or drawings to determine Metrology requirements.
- Develops calibration methods and techniques based on principles of measurement science, technical analysis of measurement problems, and accuracy and precision requirements.
- Identifies magnitude of error sources contributing to uncertainty of results to determine reliability of measurement process in quantitative terms.
- Consults with Directors, Managers, Metrologist, customers, technicians, and engineering staff to evaluate operational, performance, and/or application requirements for calibration.
- Uses calibration standards, in multiple metrology parameters such as DC/Low Frequency, Radio Frequency, Microwave Frequency, Optical Radiation, Physical, Dimensional, Mechanical, Pressure, Flow, and Temperature. Operates equipment such as Multifunction Calibrators, Frequency Counters, Signal Generators, Spectrum Analyzers, Power Sensors and Network Analyzers, to perform daily calibrations, train technicians in the use of these instruments, and perform Design of Experiments (DOEs) in calculating Transcat’s Calibration Measurement Capability (CMC) in multiple parameters of Metrology.
- Formulates and designs software for automation of the calibration process, using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcome and consequences of design, in cooperation with Transcat’s Software Engineers.
- Assists in software system testing procedures, programming, documentation and validation, ability to setup/program software for calibration software packages such as MetCal, etc.).
- Trains calibration technicians on the methods, application, and uncertainties of measurements.
- Other duties as directed.
- Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) in Physics or Electrical Engineering from a four-year accredited university and a minimum of five years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Calibration Software scripting, Database software; Design software; Development software (Microsoft Visual Basic Internet software; Manufacturing software; Project Management software; Microsoft Word and Excel
- Military PMEL certificate preferred
- CCT certification from ASQ preferred
