Full-time Biologist – Redding/Eureka – Projects located in Redding, Eureka, and surrounding California counties

Established in 1999, Transcon Environmental, Inc., offers environmental consulting services throughout the United States with our Corporate Office based in Mesa, AZ and offices in Ferndale and Santa Rosa, California; Cedar City and Draper, Utah; Rawlins, Wyoming; and Roanoke, Virginia.

Our highly successful team of environmental planners, biologists and archaeologists provides environmental planning, permitting, and compliance as well as infrastructure siting, Class I and Class III studies, Historic Property Treatment Plans, and environmental construction management and monitoring. We are seeking qualified full-time biologists to primarily perform field work that currently reside in Shasta County and/or in the following California counties: Trinity, Humboldt, Tehama. Field work will primarily include special status plant and wildlife surveys, construction monitoring, nesting bird surveys, and riparian and other habitat assessments. Fieldwork will include both one-day and multiple-day assignments. Work is likely to consist of five 10-hour days each week, plus travel to/from site. However, we will consider applicants with less availability. Candidates applying for this position will be based out of one of Transcon’s offices or remote from home.

 

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation is based on qualifications, location, and relevant experience but will likely range between $22-$30 per hour.

This on-call position is a non-exempt (hourly) position and is eligible for benefits. Full-time status is contingent upon Transcon’s project-specific contract execution.

Location:

The position will be remote only, reporting to our Ferndale, California office. Successful candidates will work and travel to fieldwork locations from their homes.

Responsibilities:

  • Special status plant and wildlife surveys
  • Nesting bird surveys
  • Vernal pool surveys
  • Habitat assessments
  • Biological monitoring during construction activities to ensure resource protection measures are being implemented
  • Work will primarily be field based; successful applicants should be capable of working long days in the field throughout the year, including single- and multi-day assignments
  • Botanical surveys for qualified applicants (botanical experience not required, but is a plus)

Skills and Requirements:

  • S. degree (M.S. preferred) in biology, ecology, natural resources, and/or a closely related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of California fauna
  • Minimum of 3 months previous experience conducting nesting bird and/or special status wildlife surveys
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently with short deadlines
  • Highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Ability to interact and coordinate with state, federal, and tribal agencies
  • Proficiency with standard field equipment and technology

Experience in the following is preferred:

  • Experience monitoring and surveying for bats, amphibians, and nesting birds (particularly Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet)
  • Botanical survey experience and familiarity using a dichotomous key to identify plant species is a plus
  • SWPP certification
  • Possession of a Scientific Collecting or Federal 10a1a permit is a plus
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with typical utility operations and maintenance activities
  • Familiarity with ESRI GIS applications (including desktop, ArcGIS, Collector, Survey123, etc.)
  • Excellent navigation skills and good driving record
  • Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road or in rough terrain
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with construction crews
