TransitAmerica Services, Inc. is currently seeking to fill Power Director positions in Menlo Park, CA.

The Caltrain Modernization (CalMod) program is upgrading the Caltrain’s commuter rail to improve the performance, operating efficiency, reliability, and safety of their operations. A key component for the CalMod program is the electrification of their right of way. The new electrified territory will be dispatched and supervised by the Power Director position. The Power Director is essential to the daily operations of the Caltrain passenger rail service and is a leadership position within the Centralized Control Facility (CCF). The Power Director is responsible for supporting the Caltrain daily operating plan by ensuring that reliable Overhead Contact System (OCS) and Traction Power Substation (TPS) systems are operational and controlled to provide service and maintenance activities to be completed safely and efficiently.

The Power Director will continuously monitor and operate the traction power system to assure the highest level of safety, reliability and customer service to achieve company related goals. Perform electrical switching on a planned, emergent and emergency basis using the remote SCADA system.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the Power Director SCADA displays to remain abreast of current conditions and take appropriate actions to maintain system voltages.
  • Manage real-time system alarm status.
  • Identify emergency situations and abnormal conditions and implement actions required to allow for the continued electrified train movement.
  • Prepare and independently review clearance orders to assure the safe work area for field forces working on the electric traction power system.
  • Plan, coordinate, authorize, and direct switching and blocking to assure the safe work area for field forces working on the traction power system.
  • Serve as the tagging authority by directing the application of safety tagging procedures.
  • Notify and direct appropriate personnel as needed to take necessary actions associated with equipment breakdowns or malfunctions, emergencies, and various other occurrences on the traction power system.
  • Authorize and direct emergency switching and blocking to restore tripped or faulted equipment.
  • Maintain records of activities associated with the Power Director function.
  • Maintain on-going communication with the on-duty Manager in order to keep him/her informed of all pertinent operational information.
  • Interface with field forces, train dispatchers, local utility and contractors.
  • Position may require travel between Menlo Park and San Jose, CA.
  • Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with traction power switching on a passenger or light rail system; preferred.
  • Experience working as an operator at a utility or power plant; preferred.
  • Previous related experience: Power Plant Operator, Power Dispatcher, Systems Operator, Distribution Operator, or Transmission Operator.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated use of three-part communications.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with train dispatchers, contractors and local utility.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and judgment.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies and manage stressful situations.
  • Must successfully complete on-the-job training requirements for the position.
  • Selection process includes candidates passing the Power Director’s Test and a test measuring the ability to work in a high stress environment.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
  • Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
  • Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
