What are the responsibilities and job description for the Instrument Person position at TRC Companies?

SUMMARY: Operates and maintains the survey instrumentation. Responsible for assigned surveying activities including turning angles, shooting distances and the collection of the necessary survey data. Works closely with the Survey Party Chief to execute the survey work. Reports to the Survey Party Chief for resolving surveying problems that may arise on the project. Keeps abreast of the proper procedures and methods for survey instrumentation operation and any revised surveying procedures as may be required by the Survey Party Chief. May require work outside of normal business hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Audit and maintain spare parts inventory and manage documentation around instruments
- Assemble, disassemble, and test parts of instruments. Respond to outages and problems promptly and document root causes
- Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot instrumentation
- Calibrate temperature, pressure, flow, or other characteristics of instruments
- Fully competent at performing the common tasks and responsibilities under general supervision
- Assists the Survey Party Chief with the assigned project survey activities
- Performs assigned survey instrumentation operations activities safely and has the first line of responsibility for the collected survey data
- Assures that company and project surveying procedures are properly implemented to achieve a quality survey job
- Reports to the Survey Party Chief for interpretation of the TRC Survey Procedures
- Assists in indoctrination of survey personnel assigned to a project regarding Company Values, general surveying safe work practices and project survey procedures during the initiation of survey work in the field.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age to apply
- High School Diploma
- Minimum of two (2) years surveying Instrument man/person experience
- Must be knowledgeable in the electronic data collection methods of cross-country pipeline surveying
- Must have knowledge of survey instrumentation, operating procedures, and survey data collection techniques
- Global Positioning Systems (GPS) knowledge preferred
- ACSM Survey Technician Certificate desirable
- Must pass pre-employment and random drug tests

- Proficiency in PC operation, including spreadsheet and word processing programs
- Experience in database operations and the use of surveying programs desired.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to walk several (more than 10 miles) per day while carrying supplies and equipment, weighing more than 40 pounds. Ability to clear line with a machete, brush axe, or chain saw.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Outdoor environment. Must be able to perform job duties in a variety of terrain ranging from swamps to deserts to forests to mountains. Must also be able to perform job duties in various extreme climates, in every type of weather, ranging from -10 degrees and snowing to 110 degrees desert heat. Must be able to deal with a variety of plants (poison ivy, oak, and sumac) and creatures such as bears, snakes, spiders, insects, and other wildlife.
