Summary Description

Engineering position primarily providing direct office/field support of our engineering, testing technicians, and substation technicians on assigned projects.  Abilities required include the ability to perform power system design, arc flash and power system studies, electrical power apparatus testing, training, estimating, and operations/ project support for industrial, commercial, and utility electrical testing and upgrade projects in support of EnerG Test and The Tri-M Group. 


Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:


  • Complies with all Tri-M and customer safety policies and procedures.
  • Complies with all Tri-M employment policies and procedures including standards of conduct and appearance to reflect positively on the Company.
  • Performs short circuit, coordination, arc flash, and load flow studies and prepares reports. In addition, works hand in hand with engineering on design build projects.
  • Provides engineering for planning and execution of testing projects.
  • Performs quality assurance reviews of acceptance and maintenance test reports.
  • Prepares reports for power quality, system coordination, and other engineering investigations.
  • Performs field surveys to determine testing project scope of work and site conditions.
  • Prepares and conducts in-house training sessions for testing technicians.
  • Assists technicians with on-site engineering support for testing, troubleshooting, and upgrades.
  • Ability to operate basic test equipment (Insulation Resistance, Low Resistance, Ground Resistance, Metering, and Primary/Secondary Test sets.  In addition, develops the skills to not just operate, but understand the theory behind, advanced test equipment like, the protective relay set, Doble PF, and high potential sets.
  • Performs initial interpretation of all test results and consults with manager for final evaluation.
  • Provide field consultation to our testing technicians and customers during complex projects.
  • Troubleshoots electrical power equipment problems and performance issues using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Provide onsite support when required or requested, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ensures that quality and productivity meet Company and customer standards.
  • Follows proper safety and temporary grounding procedures.


Job Qualifications

Skills/Educational Requirements:


  • Four-year degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Successfully completed the Fundamentals in Engineering exam (FE Exam), or is on track to complete.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in power systems engineering with exposure to power systems and / or electrical testing.
  • NETA Level 2 certified and ability to obtain NETA Level 3 Certificate within 2-3 years or capable of certification proven by years of experience.
  • Working knowledge of NETA, NFPA, IEEE, and ANSI standards applicable to power systems electrical testing.
  • Experience with power systems modeling and analysis software, preferably SKM.
  • Education and experience applicable to registration as a Professional Engineer in the states of PA, MD, DE, NJ.
  • Willingness to be trained and educated on testing and service techniques, protocols, equipment, and technical issues.
  • Ability to organize and administer multiple job functions within deadlines.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and good mechanical aptitude.


Physical Requirements:


  • Working 40 hours/week, scheduled in 8-to-10-hour shifts.
  • Standing and climbing 4 to 6 hours/day and/or sitting 6 to 8 hours/day.
  • Kneeling, lifting, reaching above shoulders, and bending 4 to 5 hours/day.
  • Twisting (180° ) and walking 2 to 3 hours/day.
  • Squatting and sitting 1 to 2 hours/day.
  • Lifting weights of 0 to 75 lbs. at the following frequencies:  continuous lifting of 10 to 35 lbs.; frequent lifting of 35 to 50 lbs.; occasional lifting of 50 to 75 lbs.; sizes & shapes of objects vary from concrete blocks to cylinders to 10’ lengths of metallic conduit and 20' lengths of PVC conduit; average carry requirements, 60 lbs. for 40'.
  • Ability to lift from floor to above shoulder.
  • Repetitive use of hands includes: continuous grasping up to 50 lbs.; frequent pushing and pulling of 50 to 75 lbs.; fine motor coordination for equipment adjustments and test set use; and for writing, typing, data entry and filing.
  • Repetitive use of feet is required for operating heavy equipment, conduit benders and vertical climbing.
  • Vision adequate for computer use, reading, blueprint reading and color coding for wire identification.
  • Hearing adequate for phone use.
  • Balance adequate for continuous climbing of ladders, scaffolds, and lifts.
  • Environmental factors include working in:  temperature extremes of 0° F to 100° F; up to 8 hours inside or outside; atmospheric exposure to dust, gases, fumes, and odors within the Permissible Exposure Limits (PEL).
  • Special hazards include exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, and potentially explosive hazards.
  • Personal protective equipment includes use of hard hat, safety glasses, protected-toe boots, and appropriate gloves for the task.  Equipment on an "as needed" basis may include fall protection, dust mask, respirator, hearing protection, arc flash protective gear, and dielectrically insulated gloves and/or sleeves.
