Kiln Operator

General Summary: Kiln Fireman

· Visually check the following items daily:

§ Kiln cars in the store room for quality

§ Cars exiting and entering kiln for quality

§ Flashing groups to ensure they are in the correct state

§ Gas flow meters to verify that the gas is flowing properly during flash

§ Monitor the kiln condition using the computer system.

· Push brick on kiln cars to prevent falling; pick up and replace falling brick

· Keep track of all products entering and exiting the kiln and be sure cars end up on correct track

· Turn flashing valves on and off as required

· Record all quality sheets, temperature and humidity in storage room, and kiln car data on every car

· Fill pea gravel bins throughout shift using shovel and wheel barrow and shovel out pea gravel pits at exit of kiln; use rod to ensure no blockages in pea gravel feeders

· Sweep kiln entrance and exit

· Empty limestone dump hopper with forklift once/shift

· Collect brick and perform quality checks

· Data entry into computer system

· Investigate and remedy cause of any alarms that occur or call for help

· Once per week:

o Blow off dust from top of kiln using garden blower

o Blow out exit and entrance transfer pits and transfer cars

o Wipe down hand rails

o Sweep out away from kiln wall for sweeper to pick up

· Once every other week, clean debris out of vestibule

· Once per month, perform monthly greasing and inspection

Skills and Abilities

· Prioritize SAFETY first, then QUALITY and PRODUCTION

· Communicate clearly with management and fellow team members

· Must be able to stand, stoop, bend, climb and lift 50 lbs.

· Maintain cleanliness in work areas and return all tools to service in as good or better condition than when started

· Perform assignments in the order prioritized by supervisor

· Work overtime, including holidays and weekends

o The position works 12 hour shifts from 430PM to 430AM - some holidays will be required

· Other duties as assigned
