General Definition and Scope of Job
The Surgical Clerk/Scheduler is an ancillary nursing team member who functions under the direct guidance of the Charge Nurse and Director/ Manager of Surgical Services. The Clerk/ Scheduler will perform tasks related to the optimal functioning of the nursing staff and patients. Duties consist of the following:
- Computer data entry activities including daily, monthly and yearly stats concerning all aspects of surgical procedures
- Ordering and checking in of all office supplies in the Surgical Services Department
- Building of the daily Surgical Services employee call schedule
- Scheduling of all surgical procedures to be done in Surgery Department and assist as needed with scheduling in Endoscopy and Outpatient Procedure Room
- Open and active communication with Surgery Manager for coordination of block time scheduling for Surgeons and interaction with Inventory Coordinator for needed special equipment.
- The Clerk/ Scheduler works directly with other hospital departments, ordering equipment, tests and needed maintenance along with coordinating patient needs.
- They also work directly with other hospitals and doctor offices obtaining accurate patient information to be entered into the computer to build a daily Surgical Schedule.
What are the Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements?
- Current High School Diploma or GED.
- CNA or MA preferred.
- CPR required within 90 days of hire.
- Computer knowledge and experience required.
- Completion of a formal unit clerk training program or equivalent.
- Ability to successfully complete the general orientation.
- Ability to successfully complete the unit competency inventory/staff development plan.
- Experience using fax machines, intercoms, and multiple telephone lines.
- Able to read, write, and speak the English language effectively.
