The role of the PACU RN includes:
- Recovery of surgeries in specialties including general, colorectal, gynecological, urological, ENT, plastics, thoracic & esophageal, vascular, orthopedic & neuro
- Knowledge of types of Anesthesia including general-endotracheal, regional, spinal/epidural, Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC)
- Understanding of recovery needs in diverse patient populations: pediatric, adult & geriatric; outpatient, acute and critical care (including vent management); special needs including developmental and physical disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum
- Adherence to patient care Best Practices based on core curriculum set by the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN): 1:2 RN-patient ratio (1:1 for peds, critical care, special needs); airway management; postoperative pain & nausea; hemodynamics; correction of hypothermia; progression to Phase II recovery vs. admission plan of care
- Other Best Practice initiatives for the PACU RN include: signs/symptoms/treatment of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH); reversal of opiates/benzodiazepines/anesthetic agents in PACU; proper body mechanics and use of lift/transfer assist devices in PACU; treatment of, and emotional/physical support of the patient and colleague during, Emergence Delirium
What you will need:
- A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York
- ASN Required; BSN Preferred
- Phase I recovery experience preferred; critical care experience highly recommended
- Certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) mandatory upon completion of orientation (provided by SPHP)
- Registered Nurses must possess the ability to assess, plan, direct, intervene and evaluate patient care
- The RN must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written; experience in electronic health record documentation preferred (training built into orientation plan)
- The RN must be able to accommodate an on-call rotation to include 1 weekday night every 2-3 weeks, 1 weekend every 4-6 weeks, and major holidays (New Year’s Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day, Thanksgiving & Black Friday; Christmas)

Pay Range: $36.50 - $49.95
Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
