Description:

The nurse manager is a registered professional nurse, conversant with the nursing process, who has twenty-four hour accountability, long term planning and human and fiscal resources accountability in a designated patient care area. Compliance with all regulatory groups to ensure safe, ethical, and quality patient/family centered-care. The manager promotes MAGIS behavior within the organization and patient care area; and supports various health system-sponsored programs.

Position Responsibilities:

Operationalizetheorganization’smission,philosophy,operatingprinciples, modelofcare,andstrategicplans/goals.a)Develop,implementand evaluateannualdepartmentgoalsandobjectivesinalignmentwiththe mission,philosophy,operatingprinciples,modelofcareandstrategic plans/goals.b)Ensureongoingcompliancewithaccreditation,regulatory, andprofessionalstandardsimpactingtheclinicalarea.

Ensurestaffknowledgeandparticipationinqualityimprovementactivities, includingbutnotlimitedtoTheJointCommission’scoremeasureprojects, NationalPatientSafetyGoalsinitiatives,andNDNQIgoals; evidenced-basedprojectsandresearchactivities(asappropriate). a)Conductbi-annualreviewofallunit-specificpolicies/procedurestoensure compliancewithregulatorystandardsandevidencedbasedpractice. b)Communicatecurrentprofessionalnursingstandardsthatreflect standardsofcareforspecificpatientpopulations.c)Participatesin house-widequalityandsafetyindicatorsandevidenced-basedprojects,and establishesunitspecificqualityindicators.Establishesunitbased evidenced-basedprojects/researchprojectsasappropriate.d)Utilizethe patientsafetycommunicationsystem,identifyopportunitiesforimprovement andlead/participateininitiativestoimprovequalityandsafety e)Demonstrateimprovementinthequalityandsafetyofpatientcare throughaninterdisciplinaryunitbasedcommittee/mechanism,which monitorstheeffectiveness/appropriatenessandoutcomesofpatientcare.

Ensurequalifiedstafftomeetpatient/familycareneeds.a)Responsiblefor recruiting,interviewingandselectingstaffincollaborationwithHuman Resources,staffandthemultidisciplinaryteamasappropriate.b)Develop andmaintainstaffingguidelines.c)Ensureaccuracyandtimelinessof patientclassificationdataorotherprimaryworkloadstatisticsd)Provide educationalopportunitiesforstaffrelatedtoage-specificand developmentallyappropriatepatientcare.

Promotingthenursingprocess,byensuringclinicalcompetenceandservice orientationofstaffthrougheffectiveanddiverseteams.a)Collaboratewith nursingeducationtoprovidecomprehensiveunit-specificorientation programsandyearlycompetencytraining.b)Facilitate/supportopportunities forcontinuingeducationincludingin-services,seminars,conferences,and nationalcertification.c)Utilizeinterdisciplinaryresourcesforstaff development.d)CommunicateandensurecompliancewithMedicalcenter andunitpolicies.e)Providetimelyandconstructivefeedbackrelatedtoall aspectsofperformance.f)Conductcoachingandcounselingfor performanceimprovementandsuccessionplanning.

Ensurethatoperations,systemsandprocessesarestreamlinedtoprovide seamless,ethical,efficientdeliveryofpatient/familycenteredcare. a)Coordinatedepartmentalactivitiescollaborativelywithotherdisciplines anddepartmentsincludingmultidisciplinaryrounding.b)Identifyandaddress opportunitiesforimprovementinprocessesthroughpointofservice monitoring,problemsolving,andshareddecision-making.c)Champions, supports,develops,andimplementsevidenced-basedinnovationsand monitorsandevaluatesappropriately.d)Authorizepurchasesandmaintain inventoriesforoptimalunitfunction.e)Monitorandaddressenvironmental andphysicalconditionsofunit/servicearea(s)tomaintainasafeandclean environmentforpatients,families,andstaff.f)Ensureoperationand maximizeutilizationofavailablecomputerizedsystems.g)Cultivatean atmosphereofmutualrespectandtrustandfostersuccessfulpartnerships withtheadministrativedirector,unitmedicaldirector,healthcareteam, otherorganizationalunitsandthecommunity.h)Empowerstafftoimprove operationsandsolveproblemsandencouragetheirparticipationinthe shareddecision-makingprocess/unit/house-widecouncils/committees. i)Ensureconfidentialityofallpatientandstaffinformation.j)Conductall businessinanethicalmannerandfollowcorporatecomplianceguidelines.

Ensurecapital,salary,andnon-salaryexpensebudgetscorrelatewith patientcareneedsandensurerevenueismaximized.a)Coordinate, develop,implementandmonitorbudgets.b)Documentandjustifyrequests. c)Analyzebudgetvariancesanddevelopinitiativesthatcreatesynergy betweenrevenueandexpense.d)Develop,implement,andevaluate initiativestoenhanceoperationaleffectiveness.e)Develop,implement, monitor,andevaluateinitiativestoenhanceoperationalrevenuesand expenses.

Engageinanddemonstrateself-developmentinclinical,professional,and managerialareas.a)Identifypersonalandprofessionallearningneeds. b)Setspecificgoalstomeettheseneeds.c)Collaboratewithadministrative director/supervisorandservicelineteammemberstomeettheseneeds. d)Attendatleast16hoursofeducationalopportunitiesperyear. Contributetothedevelopmentandimplementationofastrategicplanfor theservicelineordepartmentasdirectedbyadministrative director/supervisor.
