What are the responsibilities and job description for the Kenai Peninsula Community Engagement Coordinator position at Trout Unlimited?

Description

TITLE: Kenai Peninsula Community Engagement Coordinator

DEPARTMENT: Trout Unlimited, Western Conservation

REPORTS TO: Chennery Fife, Southcentral Alaska Engagement Manager

POSITION TYPE/HOURS: Full-time/40 hrs per week

Trout Unlimited (TU) takes care of the rivers and clean water that trout, salmon and communities around the country depend on. We are a nationwide network of advocates, outdoor enthusiasts, volunteers, anglers and staff dedicated to protecting places where trout and salmon thrive and recovering rivers and fisheries that need help. In Alaska, we work to conserve some of the most important wild salmon and native trout habitats remaining in North America.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is an exciting opportunity to help conserve salmon and trout habitat on the Kenai Peninsula through working closely with TU staff, community members, businesses, volunteers, and partners. This person will connect with anglers and community members by attending and hosting events, sharing scientific information, and supporting and expanding partnerships. The Kenai Peninsula Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for representing TU in the community and identifying fish habitat conservation projects on the Kenai Peninsula.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, collaborative, and a reliable self-starter who enjoys interacting with a wide variety of people. They have experience and skills in a range of public outreach tactics, exceptional communication and “people” skills, and have a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision. They have a knowledge of and passion for salmon and trout, familiarity with the culture and sport of fishing on the Kenai Peninsula and are excited to contribute to a fish-filled future for Alaska. This is a remote position based in a Kenai Peninsula community (preferred locations: Sterling, Soldotna, Kenai, Cooper Landing, or Seward). This is a salaried, full-time position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Educate and engage anglers and community members in Trout Unlimited’s fish habitat conservation and restoration priorities.
  • Maintain relationships with and grow our volunteer network to increase our effectiveness and build a base of people who will help advance conservation and restoration objectives on the Kenai Peninsula.
  • Grow and engage Kenai Peninsula business supporters in fish habitat conservation and restoration.
  • Work with partners to identify and prioritize habitat restoration and protection opportunities.
  • Host multiple events and regularly attend relevant community events that build support for fish habitat conservation and restoration.
  • Represent TU in an inclusive and conscientious manner that is consistent with the TU’s brand, approach, mission, and goals.

This is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.

Requirements

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of salmon and trout habitat needs and how to engage people in natural resource issues obtained either through academic study at the post-high school level or substantial practical experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience planning and implementing events, coordinating meetings, and conducting public outreach activities.
  • Familiarity and experience using public communications platforms to engage people (ex: social media and email platforms; podcasts; video).
  • Highly motivated and self-directed, with strong time-management skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience working with diverse communities in a collaborative and inclusive manner.
  • Commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the Kenai Peninsula and to work weekend and evening hours when necessary. Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle required.
  • Physical ability to stand for several hours at a time and carry and set up equipment for community events.
  • Familiarity with the Kenai sportfishing community and basic angling experience.
  •  At least two years of experience in public outreach, education, or community engagement preferred.

At TU, we value staff diversity, and we actively seek candidates for this position who come from communities that have been historically under-represented in conservation and those who have been most impacted by degraded rivers and streams. We are committed to building space for all people to participate in our work to care for trout and salmon and clean our shared waters.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome you to read more about TU’s equity practice and values. Estimated salary range, depending on experience, is $50,000-$60,000.
