J & M Tank Lines, Inc. is on the hunt for a Fleet Safety Director to join our team at our corporate office in Birmingham, AL. The Fleet Safety Director is responsible for the management of all safety and compliance activities, programs, and processes for J&M Tank lines Inc. and its affiliated entities. Reporting to the Vice President of Safety & Compliance, the Fleet Safety Director will be responsible for day-to-day management of the safety department and oversee nationwide operations in over 12 locations throughout the southeast.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Assist in developing and implementing a comprehensive strategy that allows for continuous improvement of safety performance.
* Assist in developing and implementing proactive programs designed to identify and address driver or operations behavior that suggests a higher probability of a safety issue (e.g. predictive modeling).
* Direct driver qualification, monitoring, and discipline activities within the company. * Direct and implement driver and operations safety training programs and activities.
* Implement driver and operations incentive programs to allow for continuous improvement in safety performance.
* Direct company activities associated with accidents and worker’s compensation claims (work with VP of Safety and Compliance, insurance company and various law enforcement agencies; conduct appropriate investigation; etc).
* Conduct quarterly driver safety meetings, oversee driver compliance management, safety and operational activities associated with compliance for OSHA, DOT, and other governmental regulations.
* Conduct on-site reviews and safety audits across field terminal locations.
* Conduct monthly reviews with senior management to review the company’s safety performance and to discuss the development of new initiatives, policies, procedures, etc.
* Participate in safety events, working with the state trucking associations. QUALIFICATIONS AND
EXPERIENCE
* 3 year’s industry experience; successful and large tank truck organization preferred, with substantial work in various safety management areas.
* Proven track record improving safety performance.
* Certification as Certified Director of Safety (CDS), preferred.
* Strong communication, project management, and employee management skills. * Comfortable giving presentations to large groups and to senior management. * Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic high-volume trucking environment.
* Strong quantitative and data analysis skills; ability to understand and communicate complex analytical concepts.
* Currently hold Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tank and Haz-mat Endorsements. * Strong knowledge of FMCSA and Hazardous Materials Regulations. EDUCATION
* Preferred, but not required, Undergraduate / Graduate discipline in Occupational Safety & Health or related experience.
* Professional designations/certifications preferred, such as CSS, CDS, CSP, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
* Ability to lift over 40 lbs consistently and up to 100 lbs occasionally
* Pass DOT physical/ Drug Screen and Agility test
* Up to 50% travel
* Work in adverse conditions
* Ability to wear and be fitted for respirator
