Qualifications: •BA/BS; MA/MS; valid Massachusetts teacher certification •Massachusetts license as a Supervisor/Director or certification as an Athletic Administrator through the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association •Teaching, coaching, and administrative background preferred •Demonstrated ability to both lead and manage •Knowledge of state, conference and local rules, regulations and guidelines knowledge of coaching theory and practice Reports to: The High School Principal Primary Purpose: The Athletic Director, under the supervision of the High School Principal, provides leadership to the districts' K-12 athletic program, directs the athletic program for students, supervises and evaluates coaches, and serves as a resource to parents and the community. Responsibilities: •Leads with integrity, ethics, knowledge, responsibility, respect, courage, compassion, and a solid work ethic •Serves as chief spokesperson for the districts' athletic program •Develops an athletic department vision and philosophy that aligns and supports the schools' overall mission •Determines, in cooperation with the principals, priorities and objectives for the athletic program •Maintains a consistent focus on increasing participation and enhancing sportsmanship for students •Is responsible for the development and annual review/update of athletic department handbook and policy manual •Maintains a current copy of the conference constitution and all MIAA by-laws; stays abreast of all policy changes at state and local level and implements changes •Puts in place principles and practices ensuring a seamless transition between the middle school and the high school athletic programs •Works collaboratively with the principals in anticipating challenges and implementing measures ensuring the smooth running of the athletic program •Oversees the middle school and high school athletic programming Administration •Follows the direction of the principal in developing and maintaining procedures to determine athletic eligibility of all district athletes •Is accountable for certifying the eligibility of all district athletes •Oversees the organizing of schedules for physical examinations in accordance with MIAA requirements •Maintains accurate records of all documentation related to students' athletic participation; this includes, but is not limited to, medical and insurance forms and parent/guardian permission forms •In consultation with the principal, screens, interviews, and recommends all candidates for coaching appointments •In consultation with the principal, develops an evaluation instrument that is aligned with both the school and athletic department's missions •Evaluates coaches and trainers in a timely fashion employing a comprehensive evaluation cycle including the following: a pre-season meeting between athletic director and coach to establish goals and expectations, frequent attendance of practices and game, and a post-season meeting to provide feedback and written evaluation •Provides copies of coaches' written evaluations to the principal; makes renewal recommendations to the principal •Establishes roles and expectations for all coaches in the eligibility determination process •Ensures all athletic fees are collected in a timely fashion; establishes roles and expectations for all coaches in the fee collection process •Schedules and maintains contracts for all athletic events •Maintains a master schedule of athletic events and coordinates it with the school activities calendar in collaboration with the school principal(s) •Ensures that school's athletic website is accurate and up to date •Makes transportation arrangements for all athletic events; maintains accurate records of all transportation contracts •Arranges for all gate and event supervision and security •Is responsible, in consultation with the principal(s), for all cancellations of contracted contests; is responsible for informing coaches, players, parents/guardians, game and league officials of cancellations •Establishes and maintains behavioral expectations for all spectators and athletes; is responsible for facilitating disciplinary action when these expectations are not met •Supervises the public address system operation for home football and basketball games •Ensures appropriate awards recognition for all student athletes •Develops the athletic budget •Reports to the high school principal or designee bi-monthly regarding the athletic budget •Hires and pays officials, police, ticket takers, etc. for athletic events •Is responsible for the safekeeping and deposit of all gate receipts •Develops and maintains athletic department requisition procedures; ensures such procedures are aligned with district procedures •Approves all requisitions prior to submission to the Finance Office •Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of athletic event revenues and expenses •Provides for cleaning, repair, and storage of athletic equipment •Coordinates the use of all district athletic facilities •Makes recommendations for the maintenance and improvement of all athletic facilities •In coordination with the principal(s) and the physical education department heads, develops and implements a plan to ensure the security of all facilities Equity •Ensures equal access to the athletic program for all students •Oversees compliance with Title IX in the athletic program •Serves as an advocate for ALL sports in the athletic program and works to ensure that resources are shared in an equitable manner •Organizes all eligibility appeals as per MIAA guidelines •Works to diversify athletic programs to achieve demographic representation in all sports and staffing Professional Responsibilities •Serves as a resource to the principals and the superintendent regarding athletics and program development •Maintains regular standing meetings with the high school/middle school principals (as determined by the principals and the superintendent) •Prepares and presents a final report to the principals, superintendent, and school committees at the end of each school year •Tracks and maintains all school athletic records •Supports principal(s) with the overall leadership and management of the building, assuming other duties as assigned by the principal, such as school climate and daily operations •Stays current regarding all MIAA eligibility regulations •Is highly visible, attending as many athletic events as is reasonable/possible •Works to resolve conflicts within the athletic department; consults with the principals as necessary •Performs all other duties as assigned by the high school principal •Maintains flexibility in work schedule to travel to games and to attend late night and weekend sporting events under the discretion of the principal
