SUMMARY: Assist teachers in the special education and regular education classroom with daily activities which support student learning. This is determined by the student's IEPs and the directives of the teachers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned. Assist the teacher in routine classroom operations. Demonstrate an understanding of assigned students' learning profiles. Demonstrate initiative and creativity with students and their program. Follow through with prescribed behavioral management programs. Maintain classroom environment to support student learning, as directed by the teacher. Correct students' work; photocopies materials; keeps logs and records as directed by the teacher; writes lessons/notes on the board. Read IEPs of each assigned student. Implement accommodations on IEP (ie. taking student notes, reading to student, administering tests orally, etc.). Act as a laision between regular education teacher and special education teacher to ensure continuity of service. Prepare to assist students in specific subject areas according to the requirements of the IEPs and the demands of the content area classes. Ensure content area requirements are noted in student's plan book and the teacher is aware of same requirements. Available and ready to assist the special education and regular education teachers as needed to support student learning. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises students in the absence of the teacher for brief discrete periods of time. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Previous experience with special education students. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to staff, parents, students, and administrators. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to develop and interpret graphs, tables, and charts. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to work with assigned special education student population. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Committee policies.
