Bishop Ireton High School is seeking a full-time Library Assistant for the 2024-25 school year at our campus in Alexandria, Virginia. This position assists the school's Librarian with daily media center operations.
Duties And Responsibilities
Monitors student behavior in the library. Answers questions and provides information concerning library resources; assists students in locating and accessing materials and topics for research, reference, and assignments. Oversee use of all library spaces, reserve study rooms, and maintain a shared calendar of classes/events with librarian. Monitors work of student library assistants and/or volunteers; trains student assistants, as needed, in basic library procedures. Maintains digital catalog and process new materials, using Follett Destiny library management system. Assist students in the library computer lab with printing procedures; provides information and answers questions. Maintains and troubleshoots problems with technology; calls for service as needed. Checks in & out technology. Checks books and other library materials in and out; shelves materials. Prepares overdue notices and correspondence. Assists in taking periodic inventory of books, A/V and materials; maintains inventory records. Enters library material information on computer. Assists librarian in maintaining physical appearance of library; sets up displays; creates signage. Performs related duties as assigned from the instructional administration.
Working Conditions
Requires visual concentration on detail, flexibility and precision. Experiences constant interruptions.

Undergraduate degree preferred. Library and/or classroom experience preferred.
Candidates must be willing to undergo a background check and take required in-person Virtus training

- Ability to maintain accurate records, organize and set priorities.
- Ability to learn and demonstrate use of school technology.

- Knowledge of general clerical procedures.
- Knowledge of basic library procedures; ability to learn specific processes.
- Effective oral communication skills.
- Ability to lift boxes weighing thirty pounds.
