Tufts Physician Organization
Boston, MA Other
POSTED ON 4/16/2024
We’re saving lives, building careers, and reimagining healthcare. We can’t wait to grow alongside you.

Tufts Medicine and Tufts University School of Medicine, in Boston, Massachusetts, are seeking an inaugural Physician Executive for the Cardiovascular Service Line. This position reports directly to the Chief Physician Executive and the Chief Operating Officer of Tufts Medicine Health System.

The Physician Executive will be responsible for advancing the strategic vision for cardiovascular services, building and integrating the cardiovascular service line across Tufts Medicine. S/he will be charged with leading all activities related to the cardiovascular patient care enterprise, while supporting other strategic imperatives of the academic missions within our system, to include graduate medical education and research.

The Physician Executive will promote the continual assessment of health equity across the service line, and partner with her/his administrative leadership dyad to establish strategies and tactics that ensure equitable access for all populations and communities to cardiovascular services at Tufts Medicine.

The role also encompasses leadership of the CardioVascular Center (CVC) at Tufts Medical Center.  The CVC is comprised of the Division of Cardiology, the Division of Cardiac Surgery and the Division of Vascular Surgery. Among many successful collaborative programs, the CVC has the largest advanced heart failure program in New England. Over the last 5 years, we've performed more heart transplants than any other hospital in Boston and we are one of the top heart transplant centers in the US.  With over $197,000,000 in Net Revenue and >3000 inpatient discharges at Tufts Medical Center, the CVC provides quality care across the full spectrum of cardiac and vascular services.

In contrast to many CV Institutes or Centers at academic medical centers, the CVC is a distinct and integrated financial entity within Tufts Medical Center, and has responsibility for optimizing operations, quality and financials at the individual physician, hospital and system level.

The CardioVascular Center has a strong ambulatory presence in the Boston area. We see >6500 new patient and 40,000 existing patient visits annually; our care network extends beyond our Boston facility to our other Tufts Medicine sites and communities. A highly robust Critical Care program run collaboratively with the Department of Anesthesia and the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine supports an expanding critical care volume of highly complex patients. Our programmatic offerings include:

  • Advanced Heart Failure/Cardiac Transplant and MCS programs

  • General and Specialized Cardiology programs

    • Cardiac Amyloid/Sarcoid

    • Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging

    • Cardio-Oncology

    • Adult Congenital Heart Disease

    • Cardiac Imaging

    • Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy

    • Cardio-Obstetrics

  • Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart

  • Electrophysiology

  • Cardiac Surgery

  • Vascular Surgery

Throughout Tufts Medicine, we provide cardiovascular trainees with the necessary skills to become exceptional specialists in our ACGME-RRC accredited programs for General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, Electrophysiology, Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant Cardiology, Advanced Cardiac Imaging, Cardiac Surgery, Vascular Surgery and catheter-based vascular interventions.

Our cardiovascular research mission is centered in the CardioVascular Center for Research & Innovation (CVCRI), dedicated to fostering new approaches to clinical research, innovation, education and patient outcomes through an integrated cardiovascular research pipeline. It deploys the expertise of our physician scientists to the community in the form of education, prospective registries and clinical trials. Faculty members and fellows throughout the system are fully engaged in clinical research, there are currently 53 clinical studies (44 active and 9 in start-up). Of significant note, the Cardiogenic Shock Working Group (CSWG) is housed at Tufts Medical Center and its mission is to improve clinical outcomes for cardiogenic shock by promoting rigorous scientific investigation inclusive of a prospective multi-center registry to generate real-world evidence for this deadly problem.  The CSWG is supported by philanthropic partners and includes more than 30 participating medical centers around the world. The CVCRI has developed a formalized team mentoring approach for promising early-career faculty.

Substantial research collaboration takes place within the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute, which has yielded a number of influential results in the molecular mechanisms of human cardiovascular disease and the translation of bench findings to new bedside strategies for diagnosis and therapy.

Working closely with clinical and operational leaders across Tufts Medicine, the Physician Executive will ensure Tufts Medicine is staying at the forefront of alternative payment models and maintaining value added relationships with industry and payor partners, and in doing so, leading the service line in the development of strategies that focus on continuous quality improvement, efficient clinical delivery, and maximizing patient value.

  • Tufts Medicine Professional Group (TMPG)

  • Tufts Medicine Integrated Network (TMIN)

  • Tufts Medical Center

  • Lowell General Hospital

  • MelroseWakefield Hospital, Lawrence Memorial Hospital of Medford

  • Tufts Care at Home.

Tufts Medicine Professional Group (TMPG)

The Tufts Medicine Professional Group (TMPG) represents 3 distinct employed physician groups. The three-member groups are: Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization, Inc. (employed faculty practice based at Tufts Medical Center), Circle Health Physicians, Inc. (community employed physicians based at Lowell General Hospital), and Hallmark Medical Associates, Inc (community employed physicians based at Melrose Wakefield Hospital). Together, TMPG currently employs 831 physicians, 176 advanced practice clinicians and 57 scientific research staff members.  We champion a pluralistic model that transcends sites of service and specialty all under our academic health system mission.

Tufts Medicine Integrated Network

The Integrated Network comprises private practice and employed physicians across community and academic environments who have come together as equal partners in governing our Network and building healthy communities. Organized as one unified Network but with an operating focus on geographic regions where local care teams convene in clinical councils to ensure, we can best manage risk and outcomes at a neighborhood level. We define success as appropriately moving care out of hospitals, not into hospital beds. The Network makes possible our vision to deliver care close to where people live, work and play. Membership in the Integrated Network feels different. Hospitals are our partners; their bottom lines are not our Network’s purpose. Collaboration and collegiality are the attributes we value in our leaders and teams. Clear accountability for continuous improvement defines our culture and determines which providers are in – and which are out – of our Network.

Tufts Medical Center

Tufts Medical Center is a 410 bed is a quaternary care hospital and the principal teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine. Tufts Medical Center is at the forefront of education and research, training the next generation of physicians, including 48 residency and fellowship programs with over 450 residents and fellows. We conduct groundbreaking basic, clinical and health policy research and are in the top 10 percent of independent institutions receiving federal research funding and conduct $50 million annually in extramurally-funded research. Our quality initiatives consistently place us in the top 15% of all hospitals in the Vizient system. With one of the highest case mix indices of Boston area hospitals, we are proud to provide world class care to highly complex patients. Tufts Medical Center has recently earned Magnet accreditation and is a consistent Leap Frog A institution.

Lowell General Hospital

Founded in 1891, Lowell General Hospital, a three time Magnet accredited hospital, offers a full spectrum of community based cardiovascular care.  With 445 beds, it is one of the largest community hospitals in Massachusetts.  Since opening the Merrimack Valley’s first regional cardiac cath lab in 1991, the Lowell Heart and Vascular Center’s ACC accredited cardiac cath lab program provides diagnostic as well as primary and elective PCI services to the growing Lowell community.  Electrophysiology services, interventional radiology, a busy vascular program and a newly opened cardiac rehabilitation program round out Lowell Heart and Vascular Center’s offerings. We are a teaching program for Tufts Medical Center fellowship students and many of our providers hold teaching appointments at Tufts University School of Medicine.  Lowell Heart and Vascular Center is supported by both employed and private cardiology, radiology and vascular surgery practices in the Merrimack Valley and southern New Hampshire region.

Melrose Wakefield Hospital

Also founded in the late 1800s, Melrose Wakefield Hospital, a 234 bed general hospital located in Melrose, Massachusetts, provides community cardiology services in the Northern Boston metropolitan area.  Recognized as a high performing heart failure program by the US News and World Report, Melrose Wakefield Hospital Cardiovascular Center provides diagnostic, primary and elective PCI as well as electrophysiology, interventional radiology and vascular services. Similar to Lowell General Hospital, Melrose Wakefield is a teaching program for Tufts Medical Center fellowship students and many providers hold teaching appointments at Tufts University School of Medicine.  The Melrose Wakefield Hospital Cardiovascular Center is also supported by employed and private cardiologists, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons that practice in the Northern Boston area.
