Located in the Willcox A and C Buildings, the department of architecture is founded on a belief in the power of architecture to uplift the human condition and give form to society‘s highest aspirations. Students are prepared to become citizen architects - community leaders who provide a vision of a better-built environment. The department will realize its mission through teaching strategies based on Booker T. Washington’s philosophy of educating the hand and the mind together in a variety of cross-disciplinary contexts: Digital learning environment, Service learning, Life-long learning, Design-build, and Integration of studio courses with lecture courses.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Administer academic duties, which may include faculty recruitment, performance evaluation, promotion, retention, student advisement, class schedule planning, and general supervision of teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department
- Develop best practices to recruit and retain stellar students
- Coordinate the process to implement workshops that engage cultural perspectives and critical thinking skills for students
- Build productive and long term relationships with alumni and corporate sponsors
- Mentor new faculty and foster a positive and growth environment
- Work with faculty to support new professional development opportunities
- Provide leadership to the architecture faculty who will be required to be innovative and proactive in teaching effectiveness practices
- Assist in program and curriculum development and implement interdisciplinary minors in Environmental Sustainability, Visual Arts, and/or Urban Studies
- Oversee and organize peer writing groups to support and assess faculty performance in research, scholarship and teaching effectiveness
- Focus primarily on advancing curricula content based on models at top architecture programs
- Ensure that all faculty follow department policies and procedures
- Analyze any department related issues and provide immediate resolutions
- Provide direction to faculty in planning and executing an urban design-build laboratory
- Exploration and management of multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary collaborations with other university colleges/schools and business industry entities
- Performing other duties as required and assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required)
- Contribute to journals through academic writing, publish work privately or in approved journals or international journals
- Contribute through research endeavors, such as creative artistic means, exhibition, and renditions that can be listed or recorded as contribution to art and architecture and design
- Overseeing and helping the research activities in the school and creating opportunities for students and faculty members to develop their intellectual potential through research endeavors
- Overseeing faculty members in preparing for regional and national professional outreach endeavors
- Represent the department at meetings of learned and professional societies
- Knowledge of AutoCAD Architecture, Revit Architecture, SketchUp, MicroStation and other related software for the school
Qualifications (Required)
- Ph.D. in Architecture or Master’s degree in Architecture or closely related field, and/or professional licensure
- One (1) or more years of professional practice and college teaching experience in a NAAB-accredited program
- Experience with integrated practice, community outreach, and/or collaborative learning
- Demonstrated organizational and team building skills, with the ability to foster productive relationships among students, faculty, alumni, local, and national professionals
