Duties

  • Duties of the GS-7 level will be the same as those performed at the full performance level, GS-9, but will be performed under more-than-normal supervision. This list is not all-inclusive:
  • Set library holdings into online cataloging systems such as the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC).
  • Import and export master records from OCLC.
  • Perform original and modified cataloging of classified and unclassified library materials.
  • Create library resource metadata in accordance with Resource Description and Access (RDA) guidelines.
  • Apply Dewey Decimal Classification, Anglo- American Cataloging Rules (AACR) II, and Library of Congress subject headings.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to library customers.

  • A trial or probationary period may be required in accordance with agency policy.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work irregular hours of duty to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • This position has a lifting requirement of up to 30 pounds.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter.
  • This position may require temporary duty (TDY) for business for up to 5% of the time.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: To be eligible for consideration you must meet the definition of recent graduate as defined below:

Recent Graduate: a person who was awarded a degree by an institution of higher education not more than two years before the date of the appointment of the applicant. Exception: For a person who has completed a period of obligated service in a uniformed service of more than four years, the degree may be awarded by an institution of higher education not more than four years before the date of the appointment of the applicant.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant education and experience.

Individual Occupational Requirements: The Librarian occupation has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions:

Completion of one (1) full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;

-OR-

A total of at least five (5) years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience and/or education requirements listed below:

Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes (1) assisting in cataloging of library materials in various formats; (2) processing digital and printed collection utilizing library's electronic resources/ and (3) providing customer support.

Only degrees/education from a regionally accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience. Post-secondary students being considered for initial appointments to positions leading to target positions with positive education requirements should be enrolled in directly-related degree programs in order to meet the OPM qualification requirements for the target position upon completion of their academic program.
