Job Description
NOTE: This role offers a hybrid/flexible schedule, which means there's an in-office expectation of 3 or more days per week and the flexibility to work outside the office location for the other days. Locations: Minneapolis, MN, Charlotte, NC or Portland, OR.
The role will require an expert knowledge of risks and controls, strong ability to work across business areas to influence change, and strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze operational and financial impact of strategic investments and risk mitigation approaches while providing effective challenge.
A successful candidate will have the ability to objectively assess risk when evaluating strategic investment opportunities including external events and trends, industry-specific factors, and using knowledge of various risk disciplines. The candidate will establish risk governance practices based on internal and external factors, such as industry and regulatory dynamics, changes to internal objectives and development of the Bank’s Strategic Risk Framework. The candidate will also coordinate cross-functional risk assessments within Risk Management & Compliance of potential strategic investments.
- Support the development and operation of a framework for strategic investment risk oversight and challenge including new product strategies, equity investment selection, due diligence, performance monitoring and other strategic investment related controls.
- Develop and manage strategic investment risk metrics to identify, monitor and escalate risks across stakeholder and business areas.
- Coordinate due diligence activities for Risk Management & Compliance ensuring risk disciplines are represented as needed and any key risk are identified and escalated.
- Provide input into the development, management and maintenance of the broader strategic risk framework, including the Risk Appetite Statement, relevant policies and framework documents, and risk reporting.
- Participate in retrospective review of mergers focusing on financial performance, infrastructure, system integration, and human resources.
- Oversee the creation and effectiveness of business line policies, controls and issues associated with strategic investments risk.
- Advise on issue remediation to ensure strategic investments risks are sufficiently mitigated.
- Create and oversee processes and procedures that manage strategic investment risk, including internal controls and control documentation such as the RCSA.
- Engage with external stakeholders such as Corporate Audit (CAS) and regulatory agencies.
- Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
- Typically more than 10 years of applicable experience
- In-depth knowledge of enterprise risk management approaches and objectives (e.g. risk management framework, risk appetite, risk/material risk identification, risk measurement, policy development, data governance, committee governance).
- Extensive experience with capital expenditures, mergers and acquisitions, and other strategic investments.
- Robust understanding of U.S. Bank business areas, risk management programs and organizational structure or strong prior experience in creating and leading strategic investment risk for a large enterprise
- Strong leadership and management skills of processes, projects and people
- Substantial examples of driving effective change through influence
- General knowledge of accounting practices related to capital expenditures
- Strong problem-solving and people-influencing skills
- Current or prior leadership roles in one or more risk disciplines that closely align with strategic risk
- Strong knowledge of Risk/Compliance/Audit competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to credibly challenge senior and executive level managers

The salary range reflects figures based on the primary location, which is listed first. The actual range for the role may differ based on the location of the role.
