U.S. Bank is seeking a Middleware Admin Lead who will contribute toward the success of our technology initiatives in our digital transformation journey.

This role is will lead and manage a team focused on designing, building and supporting middleware application environments containing web/application servers, middleware integration products, and supporting tools. The team lead will collaborate with product owner(s), delivery, application and infrastructure teams. This role is part of a weekly on-call support rotation schedule.

The candidate must be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders, and drive efforts to completion with minimal direction. They will also have a strong passion for developing new and innovative solutions to solve existing problems, and desire to constantly improve the services we provide to the organization. The candidate is expected to have a strong aptitude, customer focus and drive for results.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop roadmap for middleware efforts including business initiatives, application upgrades, core infrastructure upgrades, middleware platform upgrades (WAS ND, JBoss EAP, HTTPD etc.) and compliance and regulatory items
  • Establish and include in roadmap compliance and operational items including functional and security patches, middleware managed server certificate refreshes, vulnerability remediation, platform upgrades and changes (AppDynamics, Puppet, Bitbucket etc.)
  • Establish and include middleware improvements (e.g. log file rotation, automation) in the roadmap
  • Provide inputs for middleware backlog prioritization including, analysis and assessment of epics/stories, SWAG / estimates, identify dependencies and story sequencing and participate in feature deep-dive working sessions and meetings
  • Lead middleware requirements definition, provide middleware architecture and configuration expertise and details about middleware product capabilities
  • Provide technical leadership for middleware efforts
  • Responsible for middleware architecture, configuration, development and deployment
  • Facilitate and participate in meetings and work sessions for middleware requests
  • Develop middleware topology architecture (in coordination with infrastructure architect)
  • Guide middleware work estimation and help identify dependencies and risks
  • Ensure and assist team in keeping V1 (Jira) epics and stories up-to-date
  • Work planning, breakdown and sequencing
  • Balance work / task allocation to capacity and skills
  • Ensure progress and ownership on tasks and follow-thorough to completion
  • Coordinate with application teams, network, Linux/Unix infrastructure, ISS and application to plan and execute middleware tasks
  • Resolve technical challenges and remove obstacles to work progress
  • Liaise with ISS teams for vulnerability remediation planning and fix
  • Create change orders and represent middleware changes in the CAB meeting
  • Ensure adherence to middleware best practices in configuration and automation (source code, branching, tools etc.)
  • Ensure proper and up-to-date documentation of middleware solutions and inventory
  • Coordinate middleware work effort with other teams
  • Be the point of coordination with teams for middleware work
  • Work with middleware scrum master and product owner to resolve dependencies
  • Provide progress updates and readouts
  • Participate in and support sync meetings, as needed
  • Implement, oversee and ensure adherence to middleware controls
  • Conduct monthly/quarterly patch reviews
  • Server inventory management and licensing
  • Middleware related incident and problem reporting
  • Middleware server capacity monitoring and planning
  • Technical ownership of middleware applications / products
  • Annual/semi-annual/quarterly certifications
  • Schedule and assign quarterly DR exercises
  • Quarterly security audits and certification
  • Support BAU activities
  • Scheduling and allocation of application DR exercises
  • Application and other change deployment tasks
  • Production incidents and problems
  • Non-production requests and issues
  • Provide and supervise production support
  • Maintain and update support on-call schedule roster in ServiceNow
  • Be point of escalation when on-call cannot be reached
  • Own problem management tasks for middleware root causes

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Five to six years of relevant experience

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • In-depth hands-on experience with installation and configuration of Websphere and JBOSS EAP application server, Apache HTTPD web server, Red Hat AMQ and Red Hat Fuse
  • Hands-on experience with configuration management and automation tools such as Puppet (preferred), Chef, Ansible, Rundeck, Jenkins, and/or related tools.
  • Hands-on experience with executing scripts and independently performing troubleshooting on Linux and/or Unix (RHEL/Solaris) operating systems
  • Knowledge of how load-balancers such as Netscaler or F5 appliances work (configuration experience for this not required)
  • Understanding of configuration management concepts and tools, and how to use them.
  • Understanding of the JVM and how it operates and optimizing it for best performance and availability; i.e. Garbage Collection, Tuning, etc
  • Basic knowledge of DevOps toolsets such as Jenkins, Kubernetes, Docker etc. desirable
  • Able to communicate processes and results with all parties involved in the product team, including engineers, product owner, scrum master, third party vendors and customers
  • Strong aptitude and analytical skills including ability to troubleshoot complex issues
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new technologies
  • Strong customer focus and drive for results
  • Focuses on the bigger picture, identifying and prioritizing with the aim to consider more than one domain in analysis
  • Considers scalability, reliability and performance of systems/contexts affected
  • Has a thorough understanding of the team's domain, how work in this domain relates to the team's objectives and deliverables and how it contributes to overall business strategy and how technical strategy maps to this
  • Looks for opportunities to simplify and improve
  • Ability and willingness to create effective technical documentation
