What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) position at UAMS Medical Center?
The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) for Integrated Clinical Enterprise (ICE) is an integral part of Nursing Service Line (NSL). This position provides clinical leadership, direction and decision making for the hospital as it relates to timely and appropriate clinical care. The ADON works collaboratively with Administration, clinical staff and various departments and services to facilitate clinical care activities. This includes patient flow and nurse staffing. The ADON will ensure that clinical operations are efficient, integrated and highly oriented to providing a positive patient experience. The ADON supports and enhances relationships with all stakeholder groups, especially employees.

Responsibilities:- Monitors bed availability, in-house transfer and anticipated discharges by making periodic, frequent rounds on all patient care units
- Communicates any Operational issues/concerns with Administrator on-call
- Determines capacity status and discusses status with CMO. Notifies appropriate leaders and departments of status changes
- Serves as resource for all nursing staff
- Manages requests for admission, communicating with physicians, clinic staff, in-house staff or the ED and PACU and other as needed
- Communicates bed availability and patient assignments with Bed Management Office to ensure a current Bed Board
- Rounds on inpatient units ensuring real time availability of management for staff members
- Responds to all medical emergencies (rapid responses, codes, etc.)
- Develops contingency plans to ensure flexibility and unit responsiveness
- Provides direction and is responsible for staffing decisions and consults with CSM or Director, as needed, for direction
- Maintains final accountability for placement of staff from nursing pools
- Facilitates the ongoing evaluation and innovation of services provided by organized nursing services and the organization as a whole
- Participates in the development, interpretation, implementation, and on-going evaluation of policies and procedures related patient care and resource management
- Serves as Incident Commander of EOC (Emergency Operations Center) until leadership arrives
- Participate in professional/institutional advancement
- Participates in continuing education

- Participates as a representative on various hospital committees and councils to develop, evaluate, and select policies and procedures that facilitate achievement of the organization and division goals
- Services as a resource to other departments in policy decision

- Collaborates and supports other department managers in the performance of their duties and in the resolution of management problems associated with Patient Care Services
- Evaluates and utilizes input from patient, families, physicians, and peers regarding staff performance and patient care provided
- Uses line of authority when communicating information/problems involving patient/staff
- Listens and initiates feedback to ensure effective communication
- Promote positive image of University Hospital
- Responds to staffing needs of unit
- Promotes a safe working environment by complying with department and institutional safety policies
- Observes safe work practices and provides input on safety issues
- Responds in emergency situations
- Intervenes in unsafe situations by taking action

- Serves as resource person to support department members in performances of duties

May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:- Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program
- Bachelors in Nursing or have plans to complete in three (3) years
- Valid RN License
- Five (5) years Registered Nursing experience
- Three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity
- Strong work ethics and accountability
- Excellent communication skills
- Basic computer skills.
- Master's in Nursing from an accredited school/college of Nursing
- ACLS
