Responsibilities
Functioning under the umbrella of the Facilities Planning and Development Division at UC Davis Health, the Space Planning Unit analyzes building space and equipment needs; manages and allocates space; provides technical information and advice on building space needs; monitors and audits spatial utilization; prepares facilities surveys and building capacity analyses; and supports the facilities data base. The role of the Campus Space Manager is to manage and develop a team of professionals who support the oversight, allocation, and utilization of space for UC Davis Health (which encompasses a nearly 140-acre campus with over 120 buildings at approximately 4 million square feet of space). The position provides high-level leadership and oversight, helps to advise senior leadership regarding overall strategy, and provides mentoring and direction to assigned direct reports and stakeholders. The position would also manage workload, provide training, evaluate performance, and implement corrective action as needed
Required Qualifications

- Must have a valid State of California Driver’s License.
- Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in planning, public policy, healthcare, business administration, social science, architecture/design, construction management, project management, real estate) and/or equivalent education/experience.
- Expert experience in space planning/programming, facilities planning and/or asset management, budgeting with a comprehensive understanding of University of California capital approvals, space, real estate, and UC Health facilities programs.
- Expert experience providing analysis involving complex issues using data sources, analytical techniques, writing, metrics and data sources for assessing facility utilization and needs for a large organization.
- Expert experience to develop long and short-term goals for resource planning, to analyze and evaluate programmatic needs, identify secondary effects, and recommend changes for effective administrative operation.
- Experience supervising direct reports and prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely and efficient manner, particularly changes in workload or assignments due to pressures of deadline and workload.
- Expert experience in stakeholder engagement, group facilitation, and coordination.
- Expert experience interacting with customers, co-workers, and outside departments through written and verbal communication.
- Exceptional writing skills to produce concise, descriptive reports and documents.
- Organizational skills to organize, plan, coordinate and set priorities effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Planning, Government, Public Policy, Facilities or Construction Management or a closely related field.
- Experience exercising a high level of judiciousness and political acumen, as well as be able to deal effectively with situations that involve a high level of ambiguity in many complex and challenging scenarios.
- Experience working with a large-scale database (preferably dealing with space or asset management) and/or work order system to include maintaining standards and data quality.
- Knowledge of a university or government work environment.
- Knowledge of, or work experience in, a hospital or outpatient setting. Understand and be conversant with concepts of desirable spatial relationships for medical and support functions.
- Knowledge and experience with policies, procedures, and practices specific to capital projects and space management in a government, university, or healthcare environment.
- Functional knowledge of the basic principles of capital program management.
- Knowledge of financial and accounting skills to develop and manage project budgets.
- Knowledge of construction sequences and practices to prepare and/or review project schedules.
- Knowledge of data visualization tools and techniques.
- Leadership skills with proven results in collaboration and participation of internal and external stakeholders.
Special Requirements
- May need to work on weekends and holidays as per workload demands.
- The position would require the ability to travel to other University of California locations.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to regularly sit, stand, walk, talk or hear and use hands to finger, feel and handle; frequently reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl in an office and/or a hospital and commercial property set within the context of a construction environment. May need to lift materials of approximately 25 lbs.
- This position is generally required to work on-site with limited remote or hybrid work opportunities
