Position description

California Sea Grant, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego (UCSD), is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The California Sea Grant College Program (CASG) (https://caseagrant.ucsd.edu/ ) seeks a resourceful, innovative applied marine scientist with experience and interest in marine aquaculture, extension programming, and in theSan Diego County and Southern California region for a position as a California Sea Grant Extension Specialist (also see https://caseagrant.ucsd.edu/our-work). This is a full-time academic position based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Biology Section, in the Academic Coordinator series. The Specialist is expected to be physically located in San Diego County and maintain a presence at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The Specialist will report through the CASG Extension Director to the CASG Director.

Sea Grant Extension Specialists work independently and together as part of a team located at universities throughout California. The role of an Extension Specialist is to address California-based coastal and marine issues using extension programming, specifically a program of integrated community/stakeholder engagement, applied research, and education to develop, disseminate, and, when appropriate, put into action science-based information and tools. Specialists use various outreach methods (e.g., workshops, one-on-one meetings) and materials to engage and inform the community, including industry members, academics, members of the public, and agency staff from local, regional, state, national, and international levels to address needs of California coastal communities.

Through this position, the Specialist will provide impartial science-based resources and leadership in topical areas related to aquaculture. We are especially interested in candidates who can build an extension program that complements current Scripps Biology Section Faculty and California Sea Grant Extension aquaculture expertise. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain external support (grants or contracts) that contributes to their extension programming. The Specialist's activities are to be integrated with and enriching to the Scripps academic community, while also supporting other California marine aquaculture partners (including but not limited to industries, academia, State, local and Tribal governments, environmental organizations, and educators).

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in marine science with expertise in developmental biology, ecology, marine organismal biology, physiology and development, or other related fields, with demonstrated experience working in any current or emerging areas related to aquaculture. The successful candidate will also demonstrate strong potential for accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. Applicants with strong organization and communication skills, and a clear ability to engage with a range of people, including other academics, stakeholders, policymakers, and the general public are preferred. A demonstrable broad range of experience in aquaculture-related research and building communities of practice is desirable. Some experience with teaching at the college level (either as an instructor or teaching assistant) is favorable. In the cover letter, candidates should include explanation of how qualifications have been met if not clear from their CV, and should include discussion of a general extension plan that outlines the types of integrated research, engagement/outreach and education (including student involvement) that they anticipate developing if appointed to the position.

Applications must be submitted through the University of California San Diego's Academic Personnel RECRUIT System.
