DESCRIPTION

The UCSD Mathematics Department is a dynamic unit with 67 faculty and approximately 30 additional non-FTEs in various instructional and research titles. These academics work on a broad range of research funded from a diverse range of federal, state and private agencies. The department is comprised of 23 career staff, and 190 Masters and Ph.D. students and 25 CSME students. All working together to generate high caliber research in a broad range of fields and provides an outstanding graduate program that attracts top-ranked students who contribute to the department’s academic reputation.

The department maintains a large undergraduate course of study that prepares pure and applied majors (over 2400) in Mathematics, as well as 57 other majors across the campus, with the strong fundamental background in mathematics needed to succeed in a variety of career options. The faculty are engaged in a vigorous research program with an average of 72 active awards in many interdisciplinary areas totaling approximately $20M/Yr. and an instructional program that enrolls approximately 40,000 graduates and undergraduates per year. As the fundamental language of science, Mathematics is an essential intellectual tool required by a trained workforce to create the technological advances of the future.

The department is the home of The Center for Computational Mathematics (CCoM). It consists of a broad and diverse group of faculty, researchers, and students, who share a common interest in the mathematical aspects of computation. The department is also the home of the Director of the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project, an intersegmental education project in California.

Applies professional Student Services concepts. Provides varied student services to students, faculty, and department / school / college management. Works on moderately complex issues. Receives assistance on more complex issues.

Under the supervision of the Student Affairs Manager, this position provides professional staff support for the administration and implementation of the Graduate educational program in the Department of Mathematics. The Student Advising Officer will ensure that all students are making progress towards their degree and career goals while remaining within established university and program guidelines and regulations. Independently responsible for graduate student affairs functions such as advising, administration, management and reporting requirements related to the implementation of the student components of departmental training grants. Including outreach, and departmental and institutional development. In collaboration with the Student Affairs Team, the Gradate Advisor will support faculty initiatives to encourage student academic success.

The Graduate Advisor is responsible for faculty support and implementation of the Computational Science, Mathematics and Engineering (CSME) program. In this capacity, the Graduate Advisor will work closely with the CSME faculty director and graduate affairs staff to administer the review process of new student applications, manage admissions decisions, and advise applicants and admitted students on policies and procedures. Act as a department liaison between faculty, students, and other campus offices to ensure compliance with all relevant student affairs policies and procedures. Make valuable contributions to the departmental Student Affairs Team and effectively represent the CSME program and policies to faculty, students, other campus units, campus committees and various outreach activities.

Responsible for compliance with Graduate Division rules and regulations regarding achieving an advanced degree, working closely with faculty/administration to resolve program deviations, assisting with authoring and maintaining graduate web pages, preparing written and electronic material about the graduate program, maintaining graduate student databases and spreadsheets.

  • Must be available to work occasional overtime during evenings and weekends as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience to counsel undergraduate and graduate on programs and curriculum. Evaluate academic records and make analytical decisions Skill in presenting information about courses, curricula, programs, and career options to small and large groups of people in an organized comprehensive manner.

  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding academic, financial, payroll, and personnel information in accordance with all applicable Federal and State laws.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to write concisely, persuasively, and in summary form. Skill to compose, edit and proofread correspondence and narrative sections of printed information. Ability to express verbally, or in writing, one's position, plan of action, evaluation or interpretation in a professional, concise, and courteous manner.

  • Effective interpersonal skills. Skill in dealing with people in crisis in a professional and concerned manner and ability to advise and listen/counsel diverse personalities using independent and mature judgment.

  • Skills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinking. Excellent organizational skills, attention to accuracy and detail, creative problem-solving skills, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks that have conflicting prioritiesand deadlines. Ability to develop, plan and execute workshops, orientations, seminars and other student programming efforts.

  • Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to gather, interpret, analyze and present statistical data.

  • Ability to multi-task; verbal and written communication skills. Ability to plan, develop, implement, manage and evaluate multiple programmatic activities independently and in a timely, efficient and accurate manner.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or related field in physical sciences or equivalent knowledge and experience to advise students on course selection and career options.

  • Knowledge of educational and private sector expectations for mathematics students and alumni.
