This position will be hired at the Spiritual Care HC Specialist II or Spiritual Care HC Specialist III level, depending on the experience of the selected candidate.

DESCRIPTION

Involves facilitating and nurturing personal religious rituals and spiritual practices for patients, their families, staff, faculty, allied health students (as applicable), and other health care team members. Provides spiritual care and emotional support, including exploration of issues that are of meaning and value and / or issues causing moral or spiritual distress to patients, their families, staff, and others. Serves as a bridge to the patient's religious community or congregation and to appropriate clergy or religious / spiritual leaders. Offers education and fosters conversation and clarification on cultural, ethical, religious, and other topics/dynamics that can affect patient care, family interactions, and staff performance.

Under general supervision, provides spiritual support and guidance to patients and their families on concerns of limited variety. Assesses the need for spiritual care and, working with supervision, charts a course of action that may involve individual and group counseling, prayer sessions, meditations, discussions, or other forms of spiritual care and guidance. Offers appropriate emotional and social support and relevant behavioral counseling to patients with challenging health conditions. Works with the interdisciplinary team to ensure the highest quality of care in meeting patients' and families' physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Assists in officiating interfaith, ecumenical, or religiously specific rituals / services for patients, families, and staff. May officiate on-site events, such as memorial services, weddings, baptisms, and blessings. Serves as an educational resource regarding spiritual care in the medical setting. Provides contacts and information on additional spiritual resources in the community as needed. Provides spiritual and emotional support to front-line staff, faculty, allied health students (as appropriate), and other health care team members. Other duties as assigned.

This position will be located at both Jacobs and Hillcrest Medical Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2 ) or more years of ministerial/chaplain experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience.

  • Completion of at least 1 unit (but preferably four) of Clinical Pastoral Education, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.

  • Hospital Chaplaincy experience with Palliative Care, including advanced care planning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certification with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) or the National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains (NAVAC).
  • A Master's Degree in theology, divinity, or religious studies.
  • Palliative Care and Hospice Advanced Board Certification.
  • Certificate in Palliative Care Chaplaincy and/or equivalent coursework.
  • One (1) year of Hospital Chaplaincy experience in supporting patients and clinical teams with decision-making.
  • One (1) year of experience with crisis intervention and end-of-life hospital spiritual care/chaplaincy.
  • Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain.
  • Bilingual - English and Spanish.
