POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a Research and Development Electrical Engineer 3.

Duties of the incumbent shall involve:

  • Using professional engineering concepts, especially in electrical engineering, the incumbent will be tasked with electrical engineering assignments and work in a specialized engineering field.

  • The work includes designing, implementing, testing, and maintaining electrical circuits, electronics for instruments, electrical systems for various scientific and research applications. These applications include real-time instrumentation acquisition systems, embedded systems design, 3-phase motor designs, high-voltage power electronics, telemetry systems, etc.

  • Apply their knowledge of electrical engineering to assist in producing electrical and electronic circuits that will be deployed in the field and laboratory.

The Multi-scale Ocean Dynamics (MOD) group is a diverse and dynamic collection of scientists (Matthew Alford, Drew Lucas, Jen MacKinnon, Rob Pinkel, Jerry Smith, Gunnar Voet, and Amy Waterhouse), engineers, postdocs and students that seeks to better understand small-scale processes in the ocean, and their impact on everything from coastal circulation to global climate change. We have multiple overlapping sea-going projects in various far-flung parts of the world, using innovative instruments that have largely been developed in-house. We are seeking several new members for the engineering side of our group that will help us strengthen and expand these capabilities.

The incumbent shall:

  • Analyze, design, build and test custom analog and digital printed circuit boards.

  • Integrate custom designed electronics with off-the-shelf components to complete instrumentation systems that meet scientific objectives.

  • Independently performs the design of integrated computer based instrumentation and data acquisition systems for measurements and remote sensing of oceanographic data.

  • Coordinate technical staff in the maintenance, modification and operation of existing instrumentation systems.

  • Coordinate technical staff in developing, designing, building, and unit testing of FPGA-based SONAR data acquisition systems.

  • Independently performs the development, design, building, and unit testing of low power ocean sensing instrumentation including conductive, inductive, resistive, thermometric, piezo acoustic, piezo mechanical, RF, and optical transducers.

  • Provide direction and guidance of technical staff in the developing, designing, building, coding, and unit testing of autonomous and tethered low-power embedded microprocessor-based acquisition systems.

  • Work in the preparation and execution of both field expeditions and laboratory measurements. Participate with scientific personnel in data acquisition, quality control and archiving.

May spend from one (1) to four (4) months at sea each year in remote locations and under adverse weather conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. Degree in electronic engineering and three (3) years of engineering experience including one (1) year of responsible design work or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Thorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.

  • Ability to work in remote locations and at sea under potentially adverse conditions for extended periods.

  • Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Knowledge of commonly accepted and effective electrical and mechanical design practices.

  • Thorough knowledge of engineering principles and mathematical techniques appropriate to the design and testing of low noise, wide dynamic range, and high power electronic systems and efficient electromechanical systems.

  • Skill and experience in design, construction, testing, and maintenance of wide dynamic range electrical circuit PCBs. Ability to implement electronic and mechanical design, construction, and wiring of new instrumentation. Experience with low noise techniques including shielding. Experience soldering and populating electronic boards with electronic components.

  • Skill and experience in reading, understanding, and creating electronic schematics, mechanical drawings and manufacturers data.

  • Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards. Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail.
