What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Research Specialist position at UCLA?
The department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences performs extensive computational research in the fields of atmospheric science, climate science, meteorology, oceanography, and space physics. Department infrastructure and operations is built and maintained by a team of information system professionals working collaboratively with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, and research scientists.
Under supervision of the CAO and Information Systems Analyst 4, this position interacts directly with our research groups to administer mostly Linux based rackmount systems. Some time will focus on department coordination of research activities (e.g. account and hardware/software lifecycle management, network administration, etc.).
Department infrastructure consists of multiple locations hosting a range of processing and storage hardware. Best practices and standards in system designs are implemented to allow for constantly expanding datasets and processing.

Demonstrated knowledge of Redhat Linux operating system, including account management and permissions, filesystems, and security (firewalld, SELinux)
Required
Experience with system hardware components, including protocols (PCIe, SAS/SATA) and interfaces (M.2, RAM, fiber connections)
Required
Knowledge of monitoring systems using SNMP, ansible, SMART, etc.
Required
Advanced knowledge of system tools including bash, python, snmp
Required
Experience with software development and deployment using containers and/or compilers, libraries, and makefiles
Preferred
Knowledge of networking including CIDR subnetting, firewall rules (both local tables and network ACL)

Advanced knowledge of Linux filesystems (ZFS on Linux, XFS, NFSv4)
