Job Summary

The research, educational and clinical duties of the Research Educational Dental Assistant include:

  • Conducting continuous quality improvement by participating in the development, implementation, and monitoring of quality metrics in research, education and clinical patient care.
  • Refining and enhancing a dental diagnostic terminology in an electronic health record by using the terminology for research, education and patient care, investigating its validity and use from a research perspective.
  • Research the dental aspects of patient safety by using patient safety triggers and verifying the triggers accuracy through chart audit.
  • Identification, development and use of Dental Quality Improvement in research, education and patient care.
  • Assist in educational planning, implementation and teaching dentistry to predoctoral dental students and residents (Advanced Education in General Dentistry).
  • Assist faculty in educational activities, preparation and implementation in individual concepts/topics, sections and courses in Preclinical Education, Biomaterials & Education and AEGD.
  • Utilize Clinical Decision Support in an electronic health record to improve knowledge of informatics science as it applies to dentistry.
  • Adhering to high standards in research, education and clinical care.
  • Limited Dental Assisting chair-side to dental providers in the provision of general dental care to patients
  • Taking ordered dental x-rays.
  • Chart dental findings, input medical and dental histories, and general duties of dental assisting including the overall quality of care tasks associated with patient care.
  • Adhering to standards of research, education and patient care as defined by the UCSF Institutional Review Board, HIPPA, Infection control.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF DEPARTMENT OF PREVENTIVE & RESTORATIVE DENTAL SCIENCES (PRDS) has a robust and expanding scientific research program. Required Qualifications

  • Graduate from a California Board-approved RDA program. Completion of a minimum of 15 months of dental assistant work experience under a licensed dentist in the US. For example: Completion of 4-month program approved by the California Department of Education and 11 months of work under licensed dentist in US.
  • Must have two years of Dental Assisting experience in a busy group dental practice;
  • Familiarity with infection control policies and procedures; HIPAA
  • IRB Training
  • Knowledge of Dentistry: Thorough academic and clinical knowledge of oral hard and soft tissue conditions. Ability to predict risks, benefits and alternatives of treatment.
  • Knowledge of Electronic health record and ability to update patients notes, objectives, forms, recent medical and dental history
  • Knowledge of Dental diagnosis: Ability of proper history taking, x-ray exposures and interpretations, diagnostic terminologies, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment planning
  • Knowledge of high clinical standards in dental practice and the demonstrated ability to implement these standards. Ability to understand patients’ needs and the knowledge to meet those needs
  • Knowledge of maintenance and operation of dental equipment and instruments
  • Sensitivity to patients’ cultural backgrounds; and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent multitasking and organization skills with ability to follow through to complete tasks
  • Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance

Preferred Qualifications

  • UCSF policies regarding research, education and clinical care, including privacy and confidentiality
  • Experience using Practice Management Software
  • Knowledge using dental electronic health record
