Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a 108 bed intensive and highly structured residential treatment for psychiatric and behavioral health needs of adolescent males and females ages 11-18yrs. Position Summary
This position is responsible for planning and providing instruction for students assigned to his/her classroom. He/She participates in departmental meetings and completes paperwork pertaining to assessment, individualized education plans, monitoring student progress, reporting student progress, and transition planning as related to each student’s educational needs. Provides education case management for students assigned to his/her classroom. He/She must maintain ongoing communication with the families and involved agencies for each student.
Qualifications
Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching License in K-12 SPED General Curriculum at least. Dual endorsement in general education in any core content area for grades 6-8 or high school in English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies is preferred but not required. Teachers must be Virginia DOE certified, may have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and be enrolled in a program for Special Education, and may hold a provisional or conditional Virginia Teaching License K-12 SPED General Curriculum valid for at least one year or be able to demonstrate coursework completion for license eligibility prior to provisional licensure expiration. Must have a good working knowledge of Virginia Special Education regulations, IEP development and behavior management techniques. Previous classroom experience in a mental health setting is preferred but not required.
