The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) invites applications for the position of Professor and Associate Dean of Nursing (ADN) in the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences (MCNHS). The Associate Dean of Nursing will serve as a tenured faculty member in the Department of Nursing and is a 12-month administrative position. UMass Boston is the only public research university in the greater Boston area. The ADN assists the Dean and Sr. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (ADAA) in the leadership of the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences (MCNHS) with a particular focus on maintaining the integrity of current and future nursing programs of study. The overall role of the ADN is to collaborate with faculty, students, and staff as a leader of the department. "Leading" in this role is defined as maintaining and transforming academic programs through active goals of inclusive excellence guided by innovation and initiative. More specifically, the Associate Dean works with the Dean, Sr. Associate Dean, and the Chair of the Department of Nursing to identify strategic areas for improvement or growth and lead the implementation of these efforts.

The ADN will be a key leader within the college, guiding innovative pathways, partnerships, and technology for the academic mission of the Department of Nursing. This leader will be the outward face of nursing for the college, representing the department in partnerships and initiatives with external entities and fostering innovative and interdisciplinary academic programs within. The addition of this position to the MCNHS is new and evolving, as such this leader will be able to assist in building efficient relationships with other units within and outside of the college. The ADN works closely with the Chair of the Department of Nursing (DON). The Chair focuses on managing and developing individuals and groups within the department using their expertise to oversee and develop faculty and staff and to recommend effective and efficient organizational structure and processes.

The ADN role includes supporting inclusive excellence in quality of nursing instruction faculty, academic programs (class, clinical, Center for Clinical Education and Research (CCER)/all modalities) and all academic standards at the level of the university (New England Commission of Higher Education-NECHE), regulatory bodies (Massachusetts Board of Registration of Nursing-MA BORN), and current accreditation agents (American Association of Colleges of Nursing/Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-AACN/CCNE). The ADN provides leads in the multi-faceted areas of curriculum and academic quality assessment, planning, assurance/improvement, and fiscal responsibility. Specific to this role will be the responsibility to serve as the program administrator of record for all pre and post licensure programs and certificate offerings (undergraduate, graduate, doctorate, post-master's certificate). The ADN is also responsible for facilitating the successful accomplishment of the nursing scholarship of teaching, research, creative, and scholarly activities in line with a research-intensive university in collaboration with the Chair of Nursing and the Associate Dean of Research (ADR).

Examples of Duties:

  • Oversight of all matters related to the integrity of the nursing program.
    • Oversight of intersection of MA BORN Regulation and AACN and CCNE Accreditation Standards
    • Complete all regulatory or accreditation annual reports or surveys
    • Collaborate with other members of the dean's leadership team and information systems director to identify and maintain data for regulatory, accreditation, and internal reports.
    • Oversight of faculty database of CVs, Transcripts, Licensure/Certification Status and Syllabi
    • Oversight of NCLEX Pass Rates and certification rates
    • Lead on the responses to MA BORN, AACN/CCNE and similar program evaluation related reports
    • Oversight of submission through encrypted email all Certificates of Graduation and Transcripts to PCS for License examination application and scheduling
    • Other duties as needed
  • Nursing Curriculum
    • Guidance and collaboration on all governance related to programmatic or course changes of the nursing curriculum
    • Oversight and direction of changing standards within the field (e.g., the new essentials)
    • Evaluation of statistical trending related to graduation rates, retention rates, enrollment
    • Other duties as needed
  • MCNHS Administration and Management
    • As a key leader in the MCNHS, will assist in strategic planning and implementation for the department of Nursing and the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences
    • Represent the Department of Nursing in external meetings and initiatives
    • Collaborate with other colleges and department leadership to maintain and initiate partnerships, pathways, and student success initiatives.
    • Regular meetings with the Executive Leadership Team of the Manning College of Nursing and Health Sciences (MCNHS) to support and guide the nursing department's strategic plan as a sub-set of the MCNHS strategic plan
    • Collaboration with the Chair of the Nursing Department and the Director(s) of Clinical Education for clinical placement partnerships
    • Other duties as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

The program administrator shall: 1. hold a current Massachusetts Registered Nurse license in good standing or be willing to obtain one; 2. possess a PhD degree in nursing or closely related field, an earned doctorate in nursing is preferred; 3. possess a minimum of five years full-time nursing experience, or its equivalent, within the last eight years, with at least three years experience in nursing education; and 4. maintain expertise appropriate to administrative responsibilities.
