The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an ABGC or ABMG certified/eligible genetic counselor. This position is a Clinical Instructor faculty, genetic counseling appointment. It is a unique opportunity to work with the newborn screening consulting team in the division and also be involved with research studies that involve return of results from genomic sequencing, care coordination and clinical counseling of the participants. One of the responsibilities of this individual is to work with the current NBS coordinator to help coordinate the state newborn screening results reported to our center. The Division of Genetics and Metabolism serves as the primary consultant for all MS/MS newborn screening thought out the state, and offers advice on all abnormal newborn screens, initial consultation for confirmation of a diagnosis and follow up including dietary management of the patients. Opportunities will be available to engage in ongoing research projects. Excellent counseling, teaching, communication and organizational skills and independence are a must. Expertise with data management is desired. Competitive salary commensurate with experience. The Pediatric Genetics team includes seven physicians, five genetic counselors, two metabolic dieticians and two nurse practitioner providers, who work collaboratively in caring for their patients and families with compassion and evidence-based care. We also have an active accredited fellowship training program. They also work and interact closely with colleagues from Adult Medical and Cancer Genetics, Maternal Fetal Medicine and Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetic Laboratories. Faculty members in the Division are actively involved in hearing loss research, mucopolysaccharidosis translational research, clinical studies evaluating the utility of using next generation sequencing for newborn screening and with the birth defects registry.The North Carolina Children's Hospital is part of a busy quaternary care medical center and a major referral center for children with complex conditions in the state and region.
