We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager of Health, Safety & Environment at UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement based in our Evanston, IL office.

The Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment will oversee all aspects of health, safety, and environmental compliance within our research environment. The Manager of Health, Safety, and Environment will develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs that ensure the well-being of employees, visitors, and the surrounding environment.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Manager of Health, Safety & Environment, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health and safety programs in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify potential hazards and risks; recommend and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Provide guidance and training to staff on health, safety, and environmental procedures, including chemical handling, waste management, and emergency response protocols.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate health, safety, and environmental considerations into research projects and facility operations.
  • Manage the procurement and maintenance of safety equipment and personal protective gear.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and coordinate inspections and reporting requirements.
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses; prepare thorough reports and recommend preventive measures to mitigate future occurrences.
  • Monitor environmental performance indicators and implement strategies to minimize the institution's ecological footprint.
  • Stay current on emerging trends, regulations, and best practices in health, safety, and environmental management; recommend improvements to existing programs and procedures.
  • Foster a culture of safety and environmental stewardship through effective communication, training, and recognition programs.
  • Contribute to and/or lead other department specific and cross-functional initiatives

Professional Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, and CDC guidelines.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to assess risks and develop practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the ability to influence others and drive change.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) are highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental science, occupational health and safety or a related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in health, safety, and environmental management, with a focus on laboratory or research environments.
