What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Support Specialist position at Union High?
The Student Support Specialist will be responsible to identify students at-risk and to be monitoring those students throughout the school year and during the normal school day. Additionally, the Student Support Specialist will work with the teachers and administrative staff and the community to assist those students at risk to stay in school and graduate on time. The Student Support Specialist will also monitor and report on the Jump Start Program at the Middle School.
Working with At-Risk Students
- Monitoring absentee list
- Working with the students assigned to ISS and OSS
- Supporting the teacher that has a disruptive student(s) in class
- Working with the administration to enforce dress code rules and tardies
Structure activities
- Work within the structured schedule of daily activities and instructional teaching
- Measure dropout rate and retention
- Establish and monitor individual and group tutoring programs
- Work with parents and guardians of at-risk students
- Instill confidence and motivate the student in a proactive manner
- Work with community leaders and other support groups
- Utilize the Resource Officer, School Nurse, and School Social Worker to address issues of at-risk students
- Work with the School Counselor
- Develop new and innovative ways to resolve issues
- Make home visits as needed to identify problems and head-off potential dropouts
- Meet regularly with at-risk students and make plans for continuous improvement
- Act as a liaison between parent, teacher and student
- Other duties may be assigned by the principal
