Licensed Practical Nurse Position Overview
The Licensed Practical Nurse, provides personal care and health teaching under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to meet the needs of patient and family, consistent with the policies and procedures of the Nursing Division and United Health Services Hospitals. Promotes a caring and healing environment for patient-centered care. Under general direction, observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes OR supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the OR staff.
Licensed Practical Nurse Responsibilities and Expectations
- Follows Infection Control policies and procedures and demonstrates expertise in Surgical scrub technique.
- Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively.
- Assists the surgeon when needed gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments and other related items during the procedure. Anticipates the surgeon’s need for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
- Maintains and organized operative field at all times by keeping the instruments clean and in their proper place.
- Keeps an accurate sponge, tape, needle, dissector, and instrument count.
- Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment in accordance with preference cards and identifies conflicts or problems. Cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case.
- Provides a safe surgical environment for the patient, identifying potential hazards to the surgeon, RN and assisting RN circulator in preoperative checks of equipment.
- Displays knowledge of potential hazards (equipment, chemical, or gases) within the Operating Room.
- Utilizes experienced OR staff as a resource, and acts as a resource for new OR personnel.
- Assists in suturing, retracting, suctioning under direction of the surgeon.
- Handles and identifies specimens per policy.
- Expedites the effective and efficient turn-over of the OR between cases.

- Preferred:
- Previous clinical experience in a hospital setting
License/Certification

- Current New York State Practical Nurse License
- CPR Certification within 3 months of hire
